Authors I Have Discovered Part I

I started a Authors Discovered series blog of authors (mainly indie authors but there will be main stream authors weaved in within these blogs forthcoming as well) that I have discovered on my reading journey from the last few years. Mainly they are within a 5 to 10 year reading span.

The more books I read by these authors then I will come back in here to update the blogs.

So here is my first series blog of "Authors I Have Discovered" and the authors are listed in no particular order:

If you feel the need to "walk on the wild side" this is an author to read for that extreme adventure. This author will build up the storyline drawing you further into her world with every turn of the page to the point where once you are into the story there is no turning back - you must plunge on to the end of the book! Now she does have some stand alone books, but she also has a couple of series, so the series needs to be read in order to understand the storylines.

This author writes haunting/supernatural books that will give you thrills and chills!  The writing style is top notch and draws the reader in quickly usually before chapter three. The author started a haunted series last year which is still a work in progress. Just a note: The book Inside Perron Manor is a prequel but does not need to be read before the series of books. I did read the prequel though before reading the first book in the Haunted series as I wanted to read the background on the manor before I jumped into the series. I have a couple more books to read by this author and then I will be caught up. 😁

Books Read:

The Demonic
Horror In The Woods
Tormented
The Nightmare Collection Volume I
The Mark
Forest of the Damned
Inside Perron Manor: Investigating Britain's Most Haunted House (prequel to Perron Manor)
Perron Manor (Haunted #1)
Devil's Door (Haunted #2)

I have not read a lot by him, but I have lots of his books simmering on my kindle. 😁

Jackpot by David Bernstein, Kristopher Rufty, Adam Cesare, and Shane McKenzie

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Four "Hellish Gore" Ride!

Gore suit extreme!

A small taste of what lies within:

A serial killer "Booker" hits the lottery, but what he doesn't expect is that other people want his winnings including a family of serial killers that live in the same area as he does. When they come to try to steal his winnings then it becomes serial killer vs serial killers and the fight is on!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

This book was a graphic romp through the minds of four authors! There is quite a bit of action especially of the blood and gore variety which took me on a ride into the twisted unknown.

When I read this book back in 2019 I had a feeling that it was going to be a fast paced fun filled ride as I had read books by three of the authors before so I knew that this book was going to be a gory ride and I had to zip up my gore suit as I had a feeling the blood was going to fly!

If you are in the mood for a twisted and bloody ride then go grab this book as you will not be disappointed. Oh and don't forget your gore suit as you are going to need it for this one!

Haunted: Mother Death (Book 5 in the Haunted Series) by Lee Mountford

πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

Five "Screaming Scary Shiver" Stars

Spooky Shivers!

A small taste of what lies within:

Paranormal Investigator, David Ritter is once again having to go check out another haunting with his team in tow as they try to figure out why a family in South Hill estate is having paranormal activity. The ghost of Mary Kane a/k/a Mother Death seems to be after the children in the family and the team want to get there asap to see what is happening with the hopes of stopping it.

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

The fifth book in the haunted series is just as creepy as all the other books in the series. This one has lots of shivering chills and thrills the more involved I became reading the story. There is not too much world building with this book as the author, Lee Mountford jumps right in with some spook action basically right away which reeled me straight into the story and then the author slowly sank his creepy hooks into me drawing me even further into this haunting realm.

As always with these books in this series the pace is perfect and when more paranormal activity starts to heat up the faster I was turning the pages. Looking forward to the rest of the series and to see where these characters are off to on their next haunting adventure.

The SΓ©ance in Apartment 10 by Ambrose Ibsen

πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

Five "Scare The Pants Off" Stars

Spooky Ride!

A small taste of what lies within:

Tori wants to be able to move into an apartment that is not on campus and she does find one but it is kind of run down, but she likes it well enough so she moves in. It is when she starts "hearing" things from an apartment above her own apartment making her wonder if she has a neighbor, but she finds out that no one lives there. When Tori and her friends use a Ouija board is when things go into overdrive and things get interesting!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

Lots of scary atmosphere in this book! The author knows how to bring about the spooks along with pulling the reader into the storyline! I have read a few books by this author and he writes lots of haunting books. The writing style just flows along and I really liked the characters in this book.

In the Dark of the Night by John Saul

πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

Four "Haunted Nightmare" Stars

Spooky and creepy!

A small taste of what lies within:

The Brewster family want to get away for vacation so they rent a mansion for the summer. The mansion also includes a carriage house from days gone by as the property is huge. What lies within the carriage house draws the son, Eric to exploring along with some friends but what they don't know is that things which don't belong to them should be left alone.

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

This was one spooky story and when I read it back in 2019 I really became steeped in the storyline. I have read quite a few books by author, John Saul but this book somehow slipped off my radar and I can actually say that I am happy that I finally read it.

Lots of creepy atmosphere kept me turning the pages in this book and once the story became full throttle with the haunting I barely could lay the book down!

Hell House by Richard Matheson

πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

Four "Ride Into Hell" Stars

This was a creepy ride!

A small taste of what lies within:

Dr. Barrett offers up to $100,000 to four people to stay in Hell House which is reported to be very haunted. Two of the people are mediums who hope to be able to tap into the other realm, which when everyone gets settled the "haunted realm" comes alive!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

When I read this book back in 2019 I was just fascinated by this classic horror story as it turned out to be creepier than I thought. There is quite a bit of ghostly activity and lots of "spook out" moments that had me jumping in my room as I was reading this book.

This is definitely a classic haunting/ghost story and should not be missed around this time of year! If you have not read this classic then get to it as time is wasting and the ghosts are ready to welcome you into "Hell House"! πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

Blood Games by Richard Laymon

 πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Four "Scary Slasher" Stars

Slice-n-Dice Romp!

A small taste of what lies within:

Five friends that have been together since college make it a habit to get together every year to relive old times and just have a good time. This year one of the friends (Helen) picks out a meeting place called Totem Pole Lodge as she loves creepy places and something terrifying happened there a long time ago, but no one knows about it till Helen reveals all. Before their stay is over they are going to wish they had never heard about the lodge!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

When I read this book back in 2017 it was my first time stepping into a Richard Laymon book and I wasn't disappointed! Lots of "hacking" fun in this story, but it did take some time getting to the actual slice and dice action, but once I got there it became a fast paced romp into the twisted mind of this author! This book is loaded with suspense and tension!

Hell: The Necromancer by Tom Lewis

πŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΏπŸ‘Ώ

Five "Shivering Spooks" Stars

Spooky and Creepy Story!

A small taste of what lies within:

Two sisters that were separated at birth have unique powers that could eventually bring forth walking evil that is wrapped up with the end of days! Everyone around them including their families will be in grave danger as their unique abilities bring forth Satan worshippers that are on the hunt for the sisters.

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

The author, Tom Lewis, brings this story to a slow crescendo as he goes into great detail of both sisters and the families that brought them up. There is tons of suspense, mystery, tension, and just downright spooky demonic themes pulsating throughout the storyline.

I just could not put this book down as the author just drew me slowly into the story and I even stayed up late into the night on a couple of nights as the story became more and more interesting that I didn't want to go to sleep till I learned what happened next.

I loved all the characters within the story and I became so involved with reading about them that by the end of the book there was some emotion with things that happened to the characters.

This was another great book by this author and looking forward to more books by him especially the creepy horror books that keep me up half the night fueling my insomnia!

If you want a scary story to read around Halloween then go grab this book as you will not be disappointed and make sure you leave a light on to keep the "demons" from evolving out of the shadows of your room!

Skull Moon by Tim Curran

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Five "Creepy Creature Feature" Stars

Wow! This book took off into the wild, wild "gory" west!

A small taste of what lies within:

U.S. Deputy Marshall Joe Longtree is sent out to investigate a series of murders that has rocked the Montana territory of Wolf Creek. No one is sure of who or want could be killing people, so to dig down deep into the mystery of exactly what is going on, Longtree hopes to find out what is really happening in Wolf Creek. What he finds is beyond his imagination and he will have to figure out what he has to do with deal with something that is not of this world.

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

This was a great western horror story that just grabbed me right away as this story took off with some action which kept me wrapped within the storyline and kept me there for the duration of the book.

There is also quite a bit of blood and gore strewn throughout this book too. I wasn't expecting that I would need my gore suit for this book, but I had to wear it as there is quite a bit of graphic gore content within.

When I read past the halfway point of the book, the action slowly starts to build up and by the time I got to about the 65% mark the action and suspense goes into full overdrive which actually drove me to reading this book till near four in the morning last night! I just could not put the book down!

First time reading this author and I have a few more books to read by him on my kindle, so looking forward to stepping back into his world again soon.

Horror Movies - October Halloween Fest (16th - 22nd)

My third week of horror movies was fun as I tapped into quite a few of the different apps this time. Also I watched one of my own horror movies that I have on dvd which I pull out every year to watch around this time of year.

16) Havenhurst (2016) - watched on Crackle

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

This movie was really good and creepy! I was kind of surprised really that it turned out as spooky as it did.

The plot is about a woman (Jackie) that moves into an apartment where one of her friends disappeared with no trace. The landlord is an elderly woman (Eleanor) and interesting enough she rents the same apartment to Jackie that use to belong to her missing friend. Eleanor runs the apartment complex with an iron hand along with her son Ezra. Weird things start happening though in the complex especially in the apartment that Jackie rents - things disappearing, noises and knocks in the apartment which gives the reasoning to maybe the complex is haunted, but it is so much more than that.

From the time Jackie moves in to the time things start happening within her apartment the tension and suspense moves up notches till by the end of the movie you have devoured a whole bag of chips! lol  Well I almost devoured them - lol.  The apartment plus the whole complex is basically booby-trapped and by that I mean you will need to watch this movie to understand what happens within this movie that will make you eat through a bag of chips or box of cookies! lol  That is why I gave this movie four stars as it kept me on the edge of my seat. Amazingly enough it didn't seem to get good ratings but I enjoyed it so I must be in the minority on this one.

17) Haunting of Helena (2012) - watched on Prime

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

The story sounded really good for this one, but I only gave it three stars as it was just kind of twilight zone weird and it wasn't really creepy, but you wouldn't know that by looking at the art cover of the movie - it looks downright scary but to me it didn't really live up to keeping me in suspense.

The plot revolves around a woman that has become recently divorced and she is in a car accident with her young daughter. They have moved into an apartment and her daughter is starting to lose her teeth. She lost her first tooth in the car accident and now she has another tooth loose. I know, you are probably wondering what lost teeth have to do with this movie - well actually the story situates around loose teeth and kind of a twisted tooth fairy story. But this tooth fairy is far from being nice and she is out for wanting anyone that lives in that apartment to lose their teeth. There is more to the story but it would give away spoilers to continue and I won't be doing that on here, so if you are curious about this movie then go watch it to learn more. πŸ˜‰

I felt that the whole movie was strange during the beginning and middle of the movie, but finally near the end of the movie is when everything makes sense and you find out more about the "twisted" tooth fairy. So that is why I gave this three stars. Critic reviews are about 4 out of 10 - so I gave it 3 which is about right I guess.

18) 100 Feet (2008) - own this one - dvd

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

This movie is probably considered rare as no one seems to know much about it. I rented it from Movie Gallery years ago - not too long after it first came out and then I ended up buying it from Movie Gallery as they would sell copies of the movies they had months later, so I grabbed a copy of it.

The plot centers around a woman (Marnie) that had killed her husband in self defense as he use to beat her all the time. Her husband had been a cop and she had reported him lots of times to the precinct where he worked of the abuse, but no one ever did anything about it. Marnie is released from prison, but has to serve her remaining sentence on house arrest and she is sent back to the home where she committed the murder of her husband. Little does anyone know that the home is harboring her dead husband's spirit and his abusive ways have not changed in death as much as they had been in life.

This movie is scary and I think it is a great ghost movie which depicts a violent ghost that will do whatever it takes to make his presence known. Lots of different things happen within this movie with her being on house arrest and that is about all I am going to say on it as anything else said would be spoilers. If you want to watch a scary movie then see if you can grab this one from somewhere. I have never seen it play on any platform as I have only seen it on dvd. But it stars: Famke Janssen (Marnie) and Michael Pare (the ghost).

19) Exorcist III (1990) - watched on Netflix

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

This was a creepy movie and I think I had seen the beginning of it long time ago, but never watched the whole movie.

The plot centers around the Gemini killer who died years ago in the electric chair, but there have been murders going on in a suburb of Georgetown in the city of Washington D.C. that make it seem there could be a copycat killer. Lt. Kinderman is investigating the murders and some things just don't add up so the deeper he digs into the recent murders the more he believes something else is going on......supernatural. That is about all I can give as I don't want to do spoilers. This movie is based off the book Legion by William Peter Blatty.

The movie is suspenseful, creepy and has quite a bit of the supernatural demonic theme running through it. But as much as I liked the movie I don't think I would re-watch it. It has some spooky parts, but it is not downright horror scary to me. Maybe the book is scarier and I will have to tap into that at some point.

20) Anaconda (1997) - watched on Prime

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

I watched this movie a long time ago, but haven't seen it in years.

The plot centers around six people that are wanting to document an elusive tribe that lives deep within the Amazon River. While they are going down the river they come across a man (Paul) that is in trouble as his boat broke down, so they let him come with them which ends up being a big mistake. Paul claims to know where the tribe is located and tells them how to get there, but he also warns them of an anaconda snake that roams the river. What they don't know is that Paul has plans on trying to capture the snake as it will bring much money and he is wanting to capture it with or without their help.

There is definitely lots of snake action in this movie and things go bad real quick when the snake shows up. Lots of fast paced action with the snake and the team trying to keep Paul under control. Interesting enough this is the only movie I have seen in this franchise, but I did notice that there are a couple more I can view on some of those apps I downloaded, so will probably tap into those before the month is out. πŸ˜€

21) Conjuring 2 (2016) - watched on Netflix

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

This was one scary movie and I feel that it is almost more scary than the first movie!

The plot centers around a house that is haunted by an old man and a demonic entity which is located in Enfield London. The family are the Hodgsons' and one of their daughters (Janet) is the key focal point in this movie. Janet sleepwalks but she also starts having conversations with someone that no one else can see which turns out to be an old man that use to live in the house and that died in the house. Things go from bad to worse as the old man tries to control Janet and there is quite a bit of paranormal activity that happens in the house, but the bedroom of Janet and her sister becomes so bad with activity that her parents lock up the room. One thing leads to another on them trying to get help which eventually Ed and Lorraine Warren get involved. From that point on in the story things get more interesting with scares and thrills which makes this a top spooky movie to watch.

So I felt that this movie was a scary one especially watching it in the dark on a quiet night in the house! There is a scene which I figure a lot of you horror lovers have seen probably more than once so I am figuring this scene I am about to mention is not really a spoiler. The scene where the nun comes to life in the home of Ed and Lorraine Warren. That is really creepy with the shadow of the nun walking along the wall to go behind the nun portrait. Yeah that scene will scare your socks right off! The first time I watched that movie I think had bad dreams! lol  Yeah it happens - sometimes stuff like this digs into your psyche and doesn't want to let go. Great movie and definitely something worth watching around this time of year.

22) The Changling (1980) - watched on Tubi

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Thoughts:

This was a great creepy movie that starred George C. Scott. I was trying to rack my brain last night on if I had ever seen it and to be honest it did not look familiar when I watched it. I had heard about it years ago, but I guess I just never got around to watching it.

The plot centers around John Russell (George C. Scott) whose family was in a horrific car accident which killed his wife and daughter. So John decides to rent a house so that he can be alone to write his music and be away from everyone. The house is huge and it is an old gothic home that has been around since the turn of the century. But what John doesn't know is that the house is haunted and as soon as he gets settled the house makes itself known to him in small ways at first, but as time goes on there is a full blown haunting.

I thought this movie captured the essence of the haunting as it was slow moving at first with little things happening to John, but then more things start happening as time goes on which John realizes not soon after moving in that the place is haunted. When the haunting really goes full throttle is when John gets involved with a sΓ©ance which brings the house alive!

So that is it for this week of my horror movie watching! I have really been enjoying the new apps that I downloaded - especially Tubi as that app is just saturated in horror movies. There are lots of movies on Tubi especially within the horror realm that are from the 80's, 90's, early and middle 2000's that just stand out. There are some newer up to date ones too, but mostly the older horror movies are within that app.

Happy Horror Movie Watching Everyone!

Five "Gruesome Gory" Stars

A blood bath story!

A small taste of what lies within:

An orphanage stands empty as it was the site of murders that happened in 1970, but now some teenagers that are graduating think it would be cool to have their graduation party there, so they go out to the orphanage to get their party started.

Unbeknownst to them though deep within the abandoned building lies an evil entity that has been biding its time for fresh blood to step within its lair and before the night is over the entity will make its presence known!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my detailed review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

This was an extreme romp through the mind of author, Brian G. Berry and the fast paced of the story kept me entrenched within the pages of this book! The beginning starts out fast with a small background story of what takes place within the orphanage back in 1970 and then the real fun begins when the teenagers show up for their party.

As always with this author there is plenty of blood and gore parts that are strewn from one end of the book to the other with detailed descriptions of those "parts" being ripped, eaten and just one gooey mess of sloshing gore entrails!

So if you are in the mood for some blood splatter then grab your gore suit and step into this book as once the blood starts flying prepared to get "bloody" wet!

Draculas by Blake Crouch, J.A. Konrath, Jeff Strand, and F. Paul Wilson

Three "Vampire Blood Sucker" Stars

This book was literally soaked in blood and gore!

A small taste of what lies within:

Mortimer Moorecock collects artifacts and when he finds an artifact of Dracula's skull he must have it so he buys it. When the package arrives Mortimer decides on the spur of the moment to sink the fangs of the skull artifact into his neck. By performing that dastardly deed will start a chain of events that will lead to an outbreak of people turning into vampires at the speed of light!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as you will need to read my full review on Goodreads.

Thoughts:

Well normally a blood soaking gore fest would earn a book like this five stars from me, but I dropped it down to a three star for a reason. This story was loaded with vampire blood and gore action, but it continued on for way too long for me. It was a cross between zombie/vampire action on steroids.

I felt that it became a little bit too repetitive for far too long with the same thing happening over and over. There were some funny parts within the story and I did like a few of the characters, but this could have been a better book if it had been a tad shorter on page length.

I did enjoy reading the biographies of the authors and they also have a section in the book where they show the emails that went back and forth between all of them as they were collaborating on this story. That was really interesting reading.
