Book Nook Retreat - In Depth Bio

 

I thought I would do an in depth bio about me and my passion for books along with why I decided to do a book blog. 

I will start out by saying that I have been reading books since I was little. My parents would buy me books all the time and I started out with Nancy Drew which I ended up with tons of those books. Then they bought me the Black Stallion book series so I read those. The only reason they bought me those books was because at the time my dad had horses and we would go riding quite a bit so I guess he thought it was fitting for me to read a book series about them. 

The spookiness though of the Nancy Drew series is what turned me toward reading horror but it was more light ghost stories - nothing graphic. But my first real taste of horror came when one of my brothers let me borrow a book called "Cujo" by Stephen King.  If I remember correctly I think I cried some with reading that book as what happens to Cujo turning rabid. But it instilled in me my love for horror from that book. After reading Cujo I was on the hunt for books by King and I found out that my library had quite a few of his books which I devoured. I read so many of his early stuff that I would have to wait till a new one would come out to read more by him. King wasn't the only one though - I would ask the librarians what other books are out there compared to King and that is when I found John Saul plus some other different horror authors. This was all back in the late 80's and early 90's. So from that point of reading Cujo I was stuck in the horror realm. 

I would still read other books from other genres - mystery, etc. but I always came back to horror. The next place for grabbing horror books was thrift stores as they would have one whole wall of nothing but horror books and they were usually cheap like $.25 or $.50 a book. Not a lot of people read horror books it seems back then so I would just load up. 

So I have read tons of books in my lifetime - more horror than anything. Later years I started reading some other genres like fantasy, science fiction, mystery, etc. I have even read romance and western stories back in the late 80's and 90's. I just wanted to try different genres to see what they all were like but my true love was and always has been horror. 

About the middle 2000's one of my friends that I have known for many years got me hooked into the website Goodreads. Once I got on there and started finding different books - that opened up a new world for me as I could look up other books and see what they were about. Also I could see what friends were reading and what they thought were good books. I have found tons through that website. Which then I started joining horror groups and getting involved with other readers that were into the same likes as me. 

That is when I discovered more books that I could sink my teeth into and then I became friends with authors through those groups. That was cool to me as back in the day authors were elusive in the book world - you only saw them on the back of book cover jackets. lol   But chatting with them and reading their books opened up a whole different world. 

As time went on over on the Goodreads website I learned how to do book reviews. I would read reviews from friends to see how they would do their reviews so I tried to see if I could do them too as at first I would just rate the books and not do actual reviews as I didn't know really how to do them.  But I learned eventually how to write reviews that would give the readers a peek into the books I read without giving away spoilers and then give some thoughts on how the book made me feel.

When 2020 rolled around I was itching to maybe try my hand at creating a book blog as I was wanting to share my passion for the books I read. I hemmed-hawed around with it for about a year before trying to figure out if I really wanted to dive into doing a book blog. I didn't really know how much time and energy it would take to create one and keep up with it.  Two of my author friends kind of talked me into it - lol.  Kept encouraging me and supporting me on starting one. I am thankful to them both as they helped me get moving on it and stop circling the mulberry bush trying to decide what to do.  

So I chatted with two of my friends from Goodreads that was actually doing book blogs at that time. One of them was a moderator for a horror group over there (if you know who you are then you know who you are as I am not name dropping here - lol) and I found out some info about book blogging. Actually joined a website that was for blogs (my friend was on there too) but the website just didn't work for me really. Then I found Blogger and started chatting with my other Goodreads friend who used Blogger for their book blogs. This person helped me tremendously as they had been on Blogger a few years and knew the "ins and outs" of the website.  I had to start from scratch on this website as it was kind of easy to work with but then there were some things that were a pain. I spent lots of energy corresponding with my friend to figure out how to do things and I am eternally grateful for all their help, support and all the messages back and forth for months! :) (If you know who you are then you know who are - lol - I know I drove you crazy my friend! - lol) 

So 2020 this book blog was born and it took me near a year to get everything set up right and to understand how everything worked - formatting blogs, etc.  

Also in 2020 I had another friend on Goodreads that was doing background artwork for her book reviews. She taught me how to get the book covers on the backgrounds. For awhile I helped her with her website on finding her backgrounds for the book covers so she could put them on her blog website and in her reviews on Goodreads.  So that is how I came to do my own for the books I read. All my background artwork is the free public domain artwork and I just add the book covers on there to spice up the book blog. I saw that my friend had her own gallery on her blog website for all the books she had read and the artwork she used so that is when I decided to do the same thing. 

All in all I am happy to say that I love doing the book blogs - I love reading books and then sharing my passion of what I read with the world. I love getting on here and creating the blog along with creating reviews that help other readers want to go out and grab the book. 

So that is a little bit about me and what I am about. My thanks to everyone I have come in contact with through reading books. I want to thank everyone that has supported my blog and thank you to everyone that has stayed with me all these years. Thank you all for sharing this blog and the reviews I do. It is much appreciated. Without books, without authors, without friends this book blog would not exist. Thank You All!!!

Tribute to Authors!

I have been thinking about this tribute for a long time and when I mean a long time I am talking about a few years with mulling it over in my head and wanting to make a blog about it but not sure with exactly what to say and getting the thoughts down in a blog post. Here it goes! 😊

I have always believed that authors are the most creative artists out there. To take words and run them all together to form sentences then create characters usually going deep into character creation and then coming up with background settings for the characters has always amazed me.  The time that authors take out of their normal busy lives to write stories and then throw them out there for readers has always been a fascination to me.  

Escaping into books and living fictional lives of the worlds that are created by authors is just pure creativity. I have been reading all my life since a very young age.  I have a bio post on this blog that says this: "Books are an addiction to me as I just love to lose myself in the different worlds that have been created by authors". 

I know that sometimes authors get bad raps and readers do not treat the authors right - I have seen this first hand myself with reviews from readers and what readers will go through to get their point across with opinions they feel that other readers should know.  For me - I just read the books and form my own opinions - I rarely read reviews from other readers before hand as I don't want any kind of influence of what others are saying about the book before going into it.  

Back in the day there were no reviews that were posted from readers - readers just read the books and if they enjoyed the stories enough they would keep the books on their bookshelves for maybe future rereads. 

I feel that if it were not for authors that the world would be a sad place as books are and always have been our escape. When things are meek and bleak in the real world we all know that we can just pick up a book and step into a world created by authors that takes us places unknown for a little while. 

I just want to say to never give up your dreams of being an author - there are readers out there that do care. We might be like "diamonds in the rough" to find but we are out there. 

Keep doing what you are doing to create these fictional worlds as there will always be someone to read them. Never give up hope and keep creating those stories. We all need an escape route and books are the escape as they take us places that we can go without having to leave our home and/or cozy chair.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

The title of this blog might seem odd but it revolves around the different types of books we all like to read. Everyone in this world that are book readers like or love books according to their specific tastes in books. Not everyone likes the same books all the time as that is what makes all of us different in this world. 

I am going to try to lay out an opinion on here how I think readers should be towards each other when it comes to reading books. I have seen some things lately on social media that makes me cringe and I always wonder why readers want to drive down other readers for what they read. There is no sense in it at all. 

Everyone is different - everyone has their own books they like to read - everyone has their own movies they like to watch - everyone has their own music they like to listen to - everyone has their own clothes they like to wear. 

My thoughts are this: Read what you want to read. There should be no judging of readers against other readers. Not everyone is the same and not everyone thinks the same. Show kindness to other readers - they are just like anyone else that wants to read books. 

I have seen a lot of stuff on Goodreads lately with readers downing other readers for what they read - that is not right. I have seen some of it on facebook as well.  

Just because the book is not your cup of tea of what other readers are reading do not be critical of other readers. Sometimes you just might be the difference in that reader's life. You might be the bright beacon for helping that reader. 

Good thoughts are this:

Be the difference - have respect for each other - encourage other readers. 

So that is my wrap up thoughts on readers and the books we all read.

Thoughts - Author Comments on Reviews

I have been on Goodreads for near nine years and I have seen all kinds of things, but I saw something last week that made me pause with eyebrows raised as I wasn't sure I was reading the post I was seeing. I literally read the post three "freaking" times as I kid you not I could not believe it! 

A reader had put up a post with a question that said this and I quote: "Does anyone else get upset when authors leave comments on the reviews? The authors should stay off of the reviews of the books." 

WHAT?!! What is wrong with that picture?!  I came close to going on a rant but the person was not one of my friends (thank goodness) so I just scrolled through all the readers reactions and I can honestly say that I was stunned by what some of the reader friends were saying on there. Quite a few of the friends were agreeing with the poster on there and I am still even shocked by that statement as I sit here and write this blog. Now out of all the comments one reader did say on there that they feel honored when the author leaves a comment on their review. FINALLY someone with some common sense! 

What is the reading world coming to when the authors who wrote the books cannot leave comments on the reviews of the books they wrote?! Where is the sense in that?!  

Here are some more thoughts on it from my end and if any author wants to leave a comment on any of my reviews my thoughts are "Go For It"!  The author creates stories - spends hundreds of hours writing them - then puts them out there for us readers to read and review. The very least that the reader can do is let the author comment on the review if they so wish as the books would not be here if it wasn't for the authors. 

I shake my head quite a lot these days as I don't know about readers sometimes and their thought processes. I am truly amazed at the things I see over on Goodreads and sometimes I just do not understand what is happening in the reading world. The more crazy stuff I see the more I want to go on rants. It is almost like "road rage" when you are driving your car and some idiot cuts you off - well in the book world I call it "reader rage" and you just want to lay into someone for saying crazy stuff about books. 

This one though takes the cake because I never dreamed that readers truly don't like the authors to leave comments! Maybe that is why some authors don't leave comments as they are worried about backlash from the reader - well let me tell you all something - if any author wants to leave comments on my reviews I would be honored as the book belongs to the author and it is their work that they have spent hours on end working to get out there to the readers! 

So those are my thoughts this week and I wonder if I will see anymore "crazy stuff" over there. Well if I do then I will write a blog about it because at least I can blow off some steam over here! :) 

Thoughts on Bad Reviews

So is honesty really the best policy on reviews? 

This is something I have been thinking about for a very long time and I have seen reviews that are so bad that I have come very close to not reading reviews from readers as all it does is make me wonder what is truly wrong with the book for the reviewer to trash it so bad? Is the storyline bad? Is the author not clear on what they are trying to convey to the reader? 

Questions just swirl around me as I think about why I should or shouldn't read the book that is being dragged through the mud with the author being dragged along right behind it. Now with that being said I do once in awhile not even read the reviews of the books as I would rather just read the blurb and if it sounds like it might be something I would like then I read the book.

Reviews from other readers sometimes get to be too critical to the point where I would sit and think about if I wanted to even read the book which really shouldn't be that way as I remember when I was growing up there was no social media for books and I would just read the books if the story struck a chord in me - there were no reader reviews to pour over and give me pause of do I really want to read this book or move on to something else. I just read the book if it sounded great and moved on to the next book. 

So getting back to this honesty thoughts on reviews. 

Too much honesty can hurt an author - this is an interesting concept really as everyone wants to be honest on reviews but there can be honesty but not "drag the author through the hot coals by their toes" honesty! If you are a reader doing this to an author by being mean spirited and just want to rant on a review because the book just did not work for you then shame on you. 

I have literally seen readers go on rants through a review - it happens more often than not - I have seen readers cussing a blue streak on the reviews as well just going off on the author. There is no cause in doing that as when doing reviews all that is basically needed in a review is saying what you liked or didn't like about the book. There is no need to go off on a ranting streak of why you didn't like the book - it is no use at all to other readers as readers will more than likely shy away from the book because they get it in their heads that since the one person(s) didn't like the book and was ranting about it then the book must be bad so there is no sense for them to read it either. 

I literally saw this about two weeks ago on Goodreads - I kid you not - a reader gave a bad review on a book and the first person that jumped on there said that after reading the review then they were not going to read the book either. Now interesting enough that book has received quite a few four and five star reviews, but just because a reader didn't like it then another reader decided it wasn't for them either. That reader let someone else make a decision for them of why the book shouldn't be read instead of making up their own mind by reading the book themselves.  

This is a wrong way of looking at it because not all readers are the same - everyone is different with how they read books. So my thoughts on what should be done on a review of a book that a reader doesn't like is that they should put some sort of disclaimer at the bottom of the review that would read something like this: "I did not care for this book, but just because I didn't like it doesn't mean that the next person will not like it - it's just not for me."  Readers can be nice about it if they calm down when they write their reviews.

This is probably why so many authors struggle to get their work noticed as these antics that the readers pull on their reviews because if the reviews are bad then no one is going to want to read the books. All reviewers need to be mindful of how they do their reviews because the books that we all read would not be here on this earth if if wasn't for authors.

Now on the other hand if you are an author/reader and you go into a rant dragging the author over the hot coals shame on you twice fold.  Now this might get sticky but I am just going to stick it out there anyway as it needs to be said. 😊

This leans more toward respect if anything as in my honest opinion authors are truly a rare breed and I would think that they should stick together, but that is not always the case with reviews I have seen. Authors tend to be sometimes more critical because well "they are authors" so they look at things differently and they look at books from an authors viewpoint, but that doesn't mean that they should be raking the author over hot coals of the book they didn't like either. 

There is a way to give a review without "ripping the heart out" of an author as the author that is doing the "ripping" wouldn't want to be on the other end of the "ripping" so when giving out reviews you can be honest but not "heart ripping" honest. 

My thoughts on how I am when writing a review. For one thing I am not a "heart ripper". If I do not like a book I will just say what didn't work for me or just say what was wrong with the book as not everyone sees or feels the same way about a book. I just think that a review needs to be told in a way that will leave other readers maybe wanting to try the book for themselves.

So the moral of the story on these thoughts are:

Try to be nice on reviews as it is truly not that hard on giving out thoughts on how you feel but while the review is being written think of how the person on the other end is "feeling" while reading the review. Also ask yourself these questions while you are writing the review too. Is my review going to be the one that makes or breaks an author? Is my review going to make readers pick up the book or turn away from the book? Does my review reflect what I feel without dragging the author's work through the mud?  

Think about the reviews as you write them as you are in control of your thoughts when writing up the review, but do it in such a way that makes other readers want to try out the book because if the review is written in such a way that makes the book look bad then there will be those select few that will not want to read the book as those readers are usually the ones that rely on the reviews to help them make their decision. Those readers do not think for themselves - they only go by what other readers say in their reviews. 

For you readers that rely on others to make your decisions stop being a follower and be a leader in reviews as a great review always helps not only the author but other readers that want to read the book or books. 

So those are my thoughts on bad reviews.

Book Recommendations

Thoughts this week are about "Book Recommendations". 


Why do people recommend books to you that do not fit your genres?  This I truly do not get at all! I have tons of books on my Goodreads bookshelves that are actually labeled by genre and author, yet I still will get book recommendations from friends of books that I do not even read and wouldn't even attempt to read. This is truly baffling to me and it is a mystery because I really cannot figure it out. I have been on Goodreads nine years and I still haven't figured it out yet! LOL :)  Maybe one of you that reads this blog will be able to enlighten me. :) 

Here are some of the examples of books that have been recommended to me and my thoughts on them:

Cook books - Though I like to cook/bake, I do not read cook books - I have no bookshelves whatsoever on Goodreads that are labeled "cook books". Now I was recommended not only one cook book (by the same friend), but four cook books within a week. Really?! The person just kept sending me cook book recs - I ended up having to send a message to them though to tell them to stop recommending me cook books and to go be-bop over to my GR shelves to see what I "really" read! Needless to say the cook book friend stopped sending me recs of cook books. 

Butterflies - This was actually just recently too and though I think butterflies are cool and all, I will not read about them. I have no nature books on my bookshelves. I do love nature, but I do not really read books about them. If I want to know anything I normally just get on the internet to look it up. 

Romance and Erotica Romance - I have no romance on any bookshelves. The friends that have recommended them to me are habitual and what I mean by that is the same friends will rec these kind of books to me all the time. I end up just hitting the "ignore" button now instead of reaching out with a message, but still I get these recs once in awhile.

History and Historical Settings - As much as I do like history, etc., I do not have anything of that genre on my bookshelves. I normally will just look it up on the internet with whatever I am interested in, but as far as reading actual books about it - no. 

So there are some examples and what is really interesting about all that is when you are on Goodreads, everything you do on there is public and all your friends see what you read, review, discuss, etc. which brings me back to the same question: Why do your friends want to rec you books that are not within your genre? Surely they see what you are reading and reviewing.

I know what some of you are going to say as I already see the "wheels turning" (lol) - that maybe the "friends" think you might want to try something "new". Well believe me when I say, I do not want to try anything "new". LOL :)  I love the genres I read and I am happy with them. 

I read a broad scope of genres too and in case anyone wants to know what those genres are then here is a list:

Horror: Everything

Science Fiction - anything with action

Fantasy: Sword and Sorcery mainly

Urban Fantasy: Anything that is loaded with action!

Crime Fiction: Serial killers/police/detective

True Crime: Everything

True Paranormal: Everything

So that is my thoughts on recommendations and if any of you are on Goodreads then now you know what kind of recs to send my way! :)

Fiction Books Are "Fiction".

My thoughts this week are: Fiction books

I don't even know where to begin on this blog as I have been thinking about it for awhile. I kind of have a pet peeve (well who doesn't - lol) and it concerns readers that truly do not understand the meaning of the word "fiction".  Being over on Goodreads has taught me some things about how readers react to authors books and what is actually inside the stories themselves. 

If an author has written a fiction story it never ceases to amaze me that readers seem to question the author about things in the story that should be real or they wonder if the author did their research on the reality of what has been written in the story. 

Listen folks, when did fiction become non-fiction? Has the world changed that much where fiction stories and the content of the stories themselves have become reality? 

The imagination of authors are amazing and if they want to write about things that exist, but they want to add a twist to it then they should be able to do that without some reader wanting to know if that "thing" really does exist or where can they find out if it exists or not. Seriously?! Really?!  

For example if an author writes about a laser gun that talks then I would not expect a reader to be questioning if such a thing exists, but I have literally seen readers asking questions of authors about things that are in the stories and wanting to know if the authors did their homework before inserting those type of things. 

In my opinion, fiction should stay fiction. Leave the authors alone is my motto and if they want to create something let them create it! If they want to add an interesting twist to something that is real then let them add it! That is what makes authors stand apart from everyone else! They have creativity and imagination! Just leave them alone and let them create whatever they want to create! 

Books have been around forever and the authors from days of old didn't have people questioning what was real in their stories as back in the "good ole days" no one cared if things were real or not. People just accepted that the books were fiction and the stories inside were totally out of the authors imagination. 

Where in the world would we all be without authors and the stories they tell?! When I sit down to read a book, I just want to be transported to the author's imagination and not worry about if the things in the books are real or not. Who cares! Just enjoy the stories and let your own imagination be carted away into the realm of the author's mind! 

Did that sound like a rant?  Well maybe so as that has been "brewing" in the back of mind for a long, long time. I just hope I get my point across to the readers of this world as the next time you question if something is real in a book make sure you are reading a "fiction" novel and not a "non-fiction" novel. It does help to know the difference between the two. 

Oh and if you need just a little more insight into the word "fiction" then let your fingers do the walking over to the dictionary and let it enlighten you. :)

Thoughts - General Reviews - Part II

Thoughts this week are reviews that make me think I am seeing double! :) Well if you want to know what that means then I will tell you. :)

It seems lately I have been coming across reviews where readers think they need to copy the blurb of the book and stick it into their review then giving a sentence or two on why they liked the book. In my opinion that kind of review does nothing for me at all because why do I want to see the blurb of the book twice? It is annoying and there is no need for it. 

The blurb of the book and the actual review are separate from each other. There is no sense in seeing the storyline of the book twice on there. When I see what the story is about then read the book and go write my review, I try to give a back story in my own words of what the story is about along with telling of how the story made me feel as I was reading it. 

That is what is most important to me on writing reviews. The story needs to be told from my perspective and what the story did for me as I was reading it. I think sometimes though that readers do not really know what to say so they that is why they copy the blurb of the book into their review so they will not have to worry about writing a review of how the book made them feel. 

I love being able to sit down after feeling the after affects of a book and just writing my thoughts of what the book did for me along with how it made me feel to read it.

Thoughts - Book Reviews (General) - Part I

My thoughts on book reviews ranges far and wide.  This post is part of a bigger picture on book reviews and I will be doing more review posts in the future.

When I first started doing reviews on books I was really a novice as I was never one to go into detail on how a book made me feel. When I first started on doing reviews they were like one paragraph with not much to tell on the book itself.  I was disappointed in myself for not putting my "feelings" into the review, so I went cruising around Goodreads checking out different readers book reviews to see how they did their reviews and what were they doing to draw other readers to their review.

Some readers on Goodreads will literally tell a story about the book and how the book literally made them feel as they were reading it. Some readers even add pictures and gifs to get their point across on the book. Some readers do not tell a story at all and some just rate the book with no story telling. Everyone is different on how to do a review and how much information they are willing to put into the review itself. Everyone has their own opinion on how they want their review to look or what they want to say in the review.

This post I am doing is how I go about doing reviews and after spending a lot of time on Goodreads looking at different reviews, I decided to try my hand at the "story telling" part of the book as I figured I would want my review to be something that readers could see and feel what I was feeling as I read the book.

So I now do "story telling" reviews by giving a little background on what the story is about and how the story made me feel. I have even on some reviews added in gifs and pictures to get my point across. I like to mix it up on what I put into my reviews. The most important thing to me on doing book reviews is that I get my point of the book across to other readers so it will give them an idea on if the book sounds like it might be something they would want to read or not.
So those are my thoughts on book reviews in general.

Reader Thoughts - Indie Authors

Thoughts not only for today but everyday.

I am a big indie author supporter and have been supporting the indie author community for a few years now. I do read main stream authors too, but I also lean toward non main stream authors. They are the ones that struggle with getting their books noticed. 

When I first started reading books by indie authors I was really impressed by the creativity of the stories. I thought to myself "Wow - this is really good"!  So good in fact that the stories were just as good as stories written by the main stream authors. So I started branching out more into the non-main stream world as I wanted to see what was out there. 

I started finding "tons of books" by indie authors in all different genres! I am thinking to myself "Cool - there are more books to be found", so I went on the hunt for more books to add to my ever growing pile of books. 

Normally those kind of authors have their book prices set low so that readers can access their books at a lower price to try them out. I would do the "samples" first to see if I liked the writing style and story of the author. By doing it that way I was able to discover new authors to add to my reading pile. 

Also having a kindle fire made it that much simpler as I was able to grab books at my fingertips and download them at a fast rate of speed! In the first year of my new found love of indie authors, I downloaded well over 1,500 books which was back in 2014/2015. 

I was on a roll as at that time a lot of the books were either free or priced below the five dollar mark, so I just would grab whatever I could as I didn't know when those books would ever be available again at the price I was getting them for, so my kindle was hungry for more! 😊

As of this writing, I am now the proud owner of over four thousand kindle books and 95% of those are indie authors. Indie authors are truly the "cream of the crop" as their books and stories have just as much passion for their work as the main stream authors do.  

Just because they are indie authors does not make them any less in the sight of the author world. They too have great stories that need telling and I am happy to say that at least I try to make an effort to grab whatever book becomes available from the indie author community. 

I will keep supporting them and will buy whatever I can when I can. Maybe by this time next year I will have another 1,500 books added to my ever growing tbr pile and I will be over the 5,000 book mark!

Okay I am off of here as I need to go buy some books! :)

UPDATE AS OF MARCH 5, 2023:

I thought I would go back in here and do an update to this blog post that I did back in May of 2020. It has been almost three years since I did this blog post and I have to say that my indie book tbr has grown big time as now my kindle and amazon cloud now holds approximately 6,499 ebooks!! 

If you are wanting stats on about how many of that total are indie books - I would say probably close to the 6,350 mark. I have some main stream stuff in my cloud but nowhere near to what I have from the indie author world! 

My thoughts are that I will have to be near 10,000 years old (LOL) to ever tap into them all but one thing for sure that I can say - I will never run out of anything to read! 😁

Thoughts - Book Mistakes

My thoughts for today are about mistakes found in books.

I have never been one to care either way about mistakes found within pages of books as I think of it like this: We are all human and no one is perfect including authors. Sometimes people go into books hoping to find something wrong so that they can then bash the book through a review. To me this is not right as I feel that when I read a book I just want to sit down and lose myself in the story. So what if there are mistakes or errors in the book it shouldn't deter from the story. There is a saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" - well I am going to re-coin that phrase and say "Don't judge a book by its mistakes".

When I sit down to read a story, I am not going into the book wondering what mistakes I will find. I just want to travel out of my reality and lose myself in another realm. That is what books are all about.
