Demonic by Jeff Strand - 4🌟

A Time of Dread by John Gwynne - 5🌟

That is my wrap up for February! :)

A Time of Dread (Of Blood & Bone #1) by John Gwynne

⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️

Five "Sword Action" Stars!

Fast Paced Action & Suspense!

I am just going to lay thoughts out instead of doing a small taste as there is quite a bit of moving parts in this story with main characters and villains that it would be hard to go into great detail of what takes place without giving away spoilers.

Thoughts:

I loved the first series of the Banished Lands and reading this series felt like coming home! There are more characters to love (Drem, Riv, and Sig) as each one of them evolves in this story. The author once again has a chapter rotation for the characters and what each one goes through as they find out that the Banished Lands are being threatened with dark forces rising and all of them have a part to play within this story.

This story has triumphs and defeats - once again there is an emotional upheaval with things that take place in the story. I felt that this book read fast for me - I have seen a few reviews saying it was a slow burn but I didn't feel that - if anything I thought it was fast paced and things happen right away when first reading the story.

This series is connected to the first series as things are mentioned from the previous books and there are some revelations within this story that breaks things wide open later in the book concerning the characters.

Another book to love and I will be continuing on with the rest of the series soon.  I want to find out what will happen next for the characters on this journey into the Banished Lands.

Once again I can say this with a sword raised high: Truth and Courage!

A to Z of Horror by Kevin J. Kennedy

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Horrific Shorts" Stars

Bloody Twisted!

I am not going to do a taste as there are lots of stories in this one so just handing out thoughts.

Thoughts:

Author, Kevin J. Kennedy wrote short stories for the A to Z alphabet and all of them are loaded with some type of horror. You will find all kind of stories to fit your horror needs. I have read quite a few of this author's anthologies and have read a few of his own stories.

I always look forward to whatever he puts out there as I know that the stories within will always satisfy my horror cravings! Another great book by this author and looking forward to whatever else he has coming in the future!

Different Strokes for Different Folks

The title of this blog might seem odd but it revolves around the different types of books we all like to read. Everyone in this world that are book readers like or love books according to their specific tastes in books. Not everyone likes the same books all the time as that is what makes all of us different in this world.

I am going to try to lay out an opinion on here how I think readers should be towards each other when it comes to reading books. I have seen some things lately on social media that makes me cringe and I always wonder why readers want to drive down other readers for what they read. There is no sense in it at all.

Everyone is different - everyone has their own books they like to read - everyone has their own movies they like to watch - everyone has their own music they like to listen to - everyone has their own clothes they like to wear.

My thoughts are this: Read what you want to read. There should be no judging of readers against other readers. Not everyone is the same and not everyone thinks the same. Show kindness to other readers - they are just like anyone else that wants to read books.

I have seen a lot of stuff on Goodreads lately with readers downing other readers for what they read - that is not right. I have seen some of it on facebook as well.

Just because the book is not your cup of tea of what other readers are reading do not be critical of other readers. Sometimes you just might be the difference in that reader's life. You might be the bright beacon for helping that reader.

Good thoughts are this:

Be the difference - have respect for each other - encourage other readers.

So that is my wrap up thoughts on readers and the books we all read.

Happy Reading Everyone! πŸ“š

Nemesis of the Gods: Trilogy by Catherine Cavendish

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Spooks & Shivers" Stars

Haunting Intrigue!

Since this is a trilogy then I am going to break it up into three book parts with a small taste of what lies within each book section and then I will add final thoughts for all three books at the end of the blog.

A taste of what lies within:

Book One: Wrath of the Ancients

Setting: 1913

The story follows Adeline who finds herself with a job inside a mansion of a renowned and deceased archeologist Dr. Emeryk Quintillus. Adeline's job revolves around her typing up memoirs from notes of Emeryk Quintillus and what he had experienced during his time of discovering Cleopatra's tomb.

When spooky things start happening in the mansion is when Adeline begins to worry about what lies within the dark shadows of the mansion as things are not what they seem and the staff within the place just seem to be not as friendly as she would like, but when Adeline wants to know more about what is causing the spooky activity and she goes exploring into places that are supposed to be off limits is when she finds there is more than "spooks" that haunt the deep recesses of the mansion.

Book Two: Waking the Ancients

Setting: 2018

Paula Bancroft and her husband Phil decide to lease the mansion that once belonged to Emeryk Quintillus even though it had been bought in later years by a man named Markus von Durnstein and now is owned by his family.

When they learn that they will have access to almost all of the mansion except for the basement is when Paula's curiosity is piqued as she cannot understand why the basement door has locks on it but no one seems to have the key for it.

While Paula and Phil seem to settle into the mansion - spooky things begin to happen to Paula right away - Phil doesn't experience anything but when his job keeps him away from home quite a bit it ends up leaving Paula by herself to explore the rambling old place.

Paula starts feeling cold drafts along with a creepy atmosphere that seems to linger in the mansion but things escalate when she decides that she really wants to get down into the basement to see what is down there and when she invites her sister over while Phil is gone from home is when things go from calm to spooky wild as something has awoken down in the darkness of the basement!

Book Three: Damned by the Ancients

Setting: 2018

Ryan and Yvonne Mortimer along with their nine year old daughter, Heidi are the next tenants to lease the old mansion from the Durnstein family. The disappearance of Phil and Paula Bancroft weigh on their minds as Phil use to work with Ryan at the UN but they try not to let it bother them as they settle into the mansion.

Not too long after moving in knockings are heard on walls and cold drafts are blowing through the mansion. Their daughter Heidi starts talking to things that are not there up in her room but what really sends Ryan and Yvonne into a shocked state is when Heidi learns how to speak German and Egyptian without anyone teaching her.

The Mortimers are not in the mansion very long before things start to escalate and forces from beyond seem to be in control of the mansion as the more they try to learn what is happening they realize that evil is growing and before they realize it they are all in the midst of powers from beyond the grave which is after the soul and body of their daughter, Heidi!

Final Thoughts:

All three stories are steeped in historical horror of the past that is tied to Egypt and Cleopatra.

The first book starts it off with glimpses into the past of the character archeologist Emeryk Quintillus and how his story is weaved into what happens within the mansion with the main character Adeline. The suspense and intrigue is built up as the story unfolds which sets the stage for the next two books in this trilogy.

The second book in this trilogy goes deeper into what took place in the first book and more things are revealed about the character, Quintillus and what his spirit was trying to achieve. There are more secrets that are revealed but there are more puzzles that pop up as to why the mansion is haunted and what the Bancrofts learn as they live in the mansion that is wrapped up with Egyptian history.

The third book is the revelation of the previous two books and goes into more depth of what made the mansion fully haunted as the Mortimer characters learn quickly that something is not right within the mansion and they will have to do what they can to save their daughter from the evil that has lied dormant in the basement.

I became attached to all the characters as I read each story and the historical theme of the Egyptian past came alive on the pages as I made my way through each story. The pace was fast through most of the trilogy as things would escalate and then the suspense would kick in where I would find myself just barreling along as I did not want to put the book down! All three stories travel back and forth between the past and the present as I learned a little more of how the character, Emeryk Quintillus was involved with the haunting of the mansion and how so much of all three stories are wrapped within Egyptian times.

Author, Catherine Cavendish has become one of my favorite authors as her stories are always wrapped up within gothic historical settings that just grab you and hurl you back to the past. I always feel when reading her books that I am right there with the characters and experiencing everything that they are going through. I could tell by reading this trilogy that the author went into quite a bit of extensive research of the Egyptian era as she brought it all to life within the pages of this trilogy. I could just feel the essence of the past wrap itself around my soul as I became involved in all three stories. Another awesome book by this author and it has been added to my favorites shelf!

Alex Gates (horror/dark fantasy)

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Alex-Gates/author/B01IO5RZVY

Website of Author: https://www.alexcgates.com/

Books Read:

Mask of Silence (Mask of Silence #1)
What's Left of the Night (Mask of Silence #2)
Shadow Born (Joseph Hunter series #1)

Thoughts:

This author I discovered through Goodreads - the book popped up as a recommendation comparison with another book I was reading so I checked it out and my first book by this author to read was "Mask of Silence". That was back in 2019. The author also stepped out into the dark fantasy world as well and wrote a series of books called the Joseph Hunter series. I read the first book and own the rest of the series which I need to continue on reading at some point. I also own another horror book he wrote that I need to read later as well. Go check out this author as you might be surprised on what you find.

David Kempf (horror)

Book Read:

The Madness of the Invisible Man

Thoughts:

I discovered this book actually on facebook as it came through my feeds and it looked interesting so I wanted to try it out. I was pleasantly surprised and liked it so much that I grabbed a few more books by this author and they are simmering on my kindle. :)  The author writes short stories so the books are quick to get through. I have one that I will be reading here shortly as soon as I finish up one of my current reads. If you want something short and horror sweet then check out this author!

Anthony M. Strong (horror/crime thriller)

Books Read:

Mirror, Mirror
The Apartment: A Haunting in New York
The Return
Soul Catcher (John Decker series # 0.5)
What Vengenace Comes (John Decker series # 1)
Cold Sanctuary (John Decker series # 2)

Thoughts:

This author I discovered way back in 2016 as I was trying to find something spooky to read and came across his book "The Return". I loved it so much that I went to see what else he had out there and that is what started my journey into his world. Then one of my Goodreads friends recommended to me the John Decker series written by this author as the books were wrapped around crime/supernatural thrillers so I do read crime thrillers quite a bit and was curious how supernatural horror could be weaved into a storyline of crime - I found out quick when I read his first book, Soul Catcher - a prequel to the rest of the series. The series is so good and I am making my way slowly through them. So if you want to read a book series that is wrapped around crime with a supernatural twist then go check out this author!

Robert McCammon (horror)

Goodreads Author Profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5244478.Robert_McCammon

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Robert-McCammon/author/B00IXPQY9A

Website of Author: https://www.robertmccammon.com/

Books Read:

Usher's Passing
They Thirst

Thoughts:

One of my Goodreads groups got me hooked into this author's work as they are big time McCammon fans so they gave me some recs of what they thought were great books by this author and so far I have to agree with them as I read the book They Thirst and was hooked. This was such a great book that I added some more of his work to my tbr pile. I actually read the book, Usher's Passing last year around Halloween and that held me in horror suspense! If you haven't tried author, Robert McCammon then now is a good time. 😁

Tim Curran (horror)

Goodreads Author Profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/497865.Tim_Curran

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Tim-Curran/author/B002OXU6R8

Website of Author: http://corpseking.com/

Book Read:

Skull Moon

Thoughts:

This author I had been seeing come across my feeds for awhile over on Goodreads - his books will pop up here and there so I had been reading something else at the time back in 2021 and this book popped up as recommendation from Goodreads so I checked it out. What a surprise I discovered as I loved this book and read this book within about 48 hours! I was hooked and I went on "Curran" buying spree and now own a few of his books that I need to step into at some point. Hoping to read a couple of them this year. If you haven't tried, Tim Curran then go check him out and you might be surprised at what you find.

John Gwynne (fantasy)

Goodreads Author Profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5898355.John_Gwynne

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/John-Gwynne/author/B00A7RL2X0

Books Read:

Malice (The Faithful and the Fallen #1)
Valor (The Faithful and the Fallen #2)
Ruin (The Faithful and the Fallen #3)
Wrath (The Faithful and the Fallen #4)
The Shadow of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga #1)

Thoughts:

I have been stepping into more fantasy the last few years, but I was seeing the book, Malice which is the first book in the series of The Faithful and the Fallen) come across my feeds over on Goodreads so I decided to check this author out. I was able to grab all the books through my local library and went on a back to back reading romp in January of 2022 as I read the whole series within a month and that was no small feat either as each book is about 700+ pages, but I was just enthralled with this author and his writing style that I couldn't get enough. Since then I have read a book in another one of his series and I am currently reading another book in a series that he has out there.  So if you want to try out a fantasy author that I will compare to J.R.R. Tolkien - yes, you read that right - I compare his storytelling to the legendary fantasy author Tolkien as author, John Gwynne is on his way in that direction. Go check him out and you won't be disappointed.

Chelsea Cain (crime thriller)

Goodreads Author Profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/48557.Chelsea_Cain

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Chelsea-Cain/author/B001H6RTQO

Website of Author: https://chelseacain.com/

Books Read:

Heartsick (Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell #1)
Sweetheart (Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell #2)
Evil At Heart (Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell #3)
The Night Season (Archie Sheridan & Gretchen Lowell #4)

Thoughts:

This author kept coming across my Goodreads feeds back in 2018 as I kept seeing her books pop up in my feeds. I like reading about crime thrillers and serial killer books so I thought I would try her out. I was hooked right away with the book, Heartsick and was wrapped up within the story that I had a hard time putting it down. There are six books in the series and I still need to read the last two books, but the four I read by her were great. She has another series out there I need to read at some point that looks just as good. So if you are looking for some serial killer action with crime thriller suspense then go check out this author. You never know as you might find your next series to read.

J.A. Konrath/Jack Kilborn (horror/crime)

Books Read:

Whiskey Sour (Jack Daniels # 1)
Bloody Mary (Jack Daniels # 2)
Rusty Nail (Jack Daniels # 3)
Dirty Martini (Jack Daniels # 4)
Fuzzy Navel (Jack Daniels # 5)
Cherry Bomb (Jack Daniels # 6)
Shaken (Jack Daniels # 7)
Stirred (Jack Daniels # 8)
Rum Runner (Jack Daniels # 9)
Last Call (Jack Daniels # 10)
White Russian (Jack Daniels # 11)
Phineas Trout Series - Three Thriller Novels
Afraid
Trapped
Endurance

Thoughts:

This author I actually found out about from a Goodreads friend as he kept telling me to go read the crime thriller series of Jack Daniels which I said I would but didn't get around to it right away - instead I decided to read the horror books by this author as he writes his horror stuff under his pen name of Jack Kilborn and I wanted to try the horror books first (well I am a horror nut first - lol) and so I stepped into his trilogy of, Afraid/Trapped/Endurance as I have owned the trilogy for a long time. I loved the trilogy so much that then I decided to check out the Jack Daniels series and I started reading them "finally" right after I read that trilogy. Love the series so much that I am still making my way through the series as Konrath keeps writing more books in the series. Soon I hope to be caught up but it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. lol  So if you want a little bit of both worlds with horror and crime thrillers then go check out his books as I am sure you will find something you like.

Brennan LaFaro (horror)

Goodreads Author Profile: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/20859521.Brennan_LaFaro

Amazon Author Profile: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Brennan-LaFaro/author/B08R6PT1NT

Website of Author: https://brennanlafaroauthor.wordpress.com/

Book Read:

Slattery Falls

Thoughts:

This author kept coming across my Goodreads feeds last year and the year before quite a bit so I decided to check him out and what a surprise I received as the book, Slattery Falls was one spooky ride! I have a couple more of his books on my kindle that I need to read by him that are simmering on my kindle.  If you want to be spooked out of your skin then go read his book, Slattery Falls and you will not be disappointed.

Nick Cutter (horror)

Book Read:

Troop

Thoughts:

This author I had been seeing for awhile over on Goodreads but when this book the Troop came up in a group read over there I decided to try him out finally and what a surprise I received as I loved the book. It had quite a few gnarly moments and sometimes I still think about the story. I have some other books by this author on my radar that I need to read at some point. So if are looking for something different in horror then try out this author.

Final Thoughts:

So that is my wrap up of 10 more authors that I have discovered within the last few years. More to come of this series soon.

Happy Reading! πŸ˜ŠπŸ“š

Horror in the Woods by Lee Mountford

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Twisted Terror" Stars

Gore and Grisly!

A small taste of what lies within:

Two couples (Ashley and Tim along with Kim and Craig) decide to get together to go on a hike and to spend some time together. They end up going through a thickly wooded area that supposedly has an urban legend of a cannibalistic family that roams the woods. The couples embark on an adventure that turns into a grisly nightmare. Is the urban legend true or is it just a myth?

No spoilers here as if that has piqued your interest then you will need to go read this book!

Thoughts:

This was one twisted nightmare with fast paced horror action that kept me up all hours of the night as I felt like I was on a bloody bullet train! I had to grab my gore suit with this one as there is quite a bit of graphic descriptions folded within this story as author, Lee Mountford takes this story deep into the backwoods where only nightmares live!

Demonic by Jeff Strand

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Dastardly Devilish" Stars

Demon Action!

A very small taste of what lies within:

Corey wants to do whatever he can to help out his co-worker, Quinn as he has feelings for her even though she is married. When Corey makes a decision to kill Quinn's husband Vic is when things go south quick as Vic is a serial killer but not just any serial killer - he is almost immortal and Corey along with Quinn find themselves in major heaps of trouble when all their plans start to unravel!

That is about all I can give on a small taste so if that has piqued your interest then go check out this book!

Thoughts:

This book read fast and right away I got caught up in the story as the more things that happened the more I couldn't put it down! I found myself barreling along at a high rate of speed during the middle of the night a few nights as I kept wanting to see what would happen next! I had to suit up in my gore suit too as this book was loaded with blood and splatter!

The characters, Corey and Quinn go from one thing to another without much let up and there were a lot of breath hitching moments wrapped within this story as the action was so fierce and fast that my fingers almost became numb flipping through my kindle pages! πŸ˜†

There is lots of dark humor as well within this story and I was biting my lips and giggling at the same time! Another great book added to my "Strand Collection" and one I won't soon forget!

Primal Terra by Tim Meyer

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Roaring Dino" Stars!

Fast Paced Action!

A small taste of what lies within:

Pursuit of a criminal leads Carla Scarletta into a time portal that sends her back to the dinosaur days! Things become even more stickier when her ex-husband, Phil is approached by a friend, Jonesy to go rescue her along with a team of experts that know about such things. But with any type of time traveling especially into a place where dinosaurs roam what could possibly go wrong? Plenty!

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers so if that has piqued your interest then go grab this book!

Thoughts:

This is my fifth book by this author and this story grabbed me from the get-go keeping me encased in it as I could hardly put it down! I literally read the first half of the book within a few hours and kept wanting to know what was going to happen next!

There is plenty of dinosaur action as the characters are scrambling around trying to stay alive, but the suspense of how the portal came to be and what the characters will have to do to try to get back to civilization just kept me wrapped within the storyline!

Another great book by this author and looking forward to reading more of his work as I own a few more books by him that are simmering on my kindle. Buddy read this with my friend, Vickie over in the Night Shift Goodreads group.

Dark Observation by Catherine Cavendish

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Suspenseful Spooky" Stars

Demonic Twist!

A small taste of what lies within:

Setting: World War II

Vi has found a job that will send her to the depths of a government complex (the war rooms) where she becomes involved with working close with Prime Minister Churchill. While she is getting adjusted to her new job - things happen at a home she is renting - strange things - spooky things that make her wonder what is going on. There are three of them that rent the home from a nice lady, Mrs. Harris - Vi, her friend Tilly, and a strange girl named Sandrine.

As time goes on with all three of them in the home - the war rages outside but inside the home creepy forces are at work which will send Vi, Tilly and Sandrine on a collision course toward hell!

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers, so if you want to know more or your interest is piqued then go grab this book!

Thoughts:

Author, Catherine Cavendish never disappoints! I do not read a lot of historical settings within horror but some authors can just weave the horror settings into historical background which can grab the reader and pull them into that time era - Catherine Cavendish is one of those authors!

This story had it all - suspense, mystery, scratching your head wonderings, demonic theme vibes pulsating throughout the story, historical settings, and tons of things happening that make you think hard.

When the demonic themes picked up more within the story as most of the story is saturated in it I had a feeling where the story was going as I have read fiction books and non-fiction books on the occult. I have read lots of true paranormal non-fiction books in the past that had demons and the occult involved so I kind of guessed some of it and my brain was already forming scenarios of what was happening to the characters in this book.

To understand more from where I am coming from then you will need to read the book and discover it for yourself as I have said enough already and don't want to go into it too deep or spoilers might arise. Go read it and let this author swirl you back to World War II letting you discover the mystery of working in war rooms with a dark occult background lurking in the shadows of your mind.

The Undertaker's Cabinet by David Haynes

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Chiller Thriller" Stars

Creepy!

A small taste of what lies within:

The story centers around an Undertaker business that started in the 1850's then was passed down from generations to the present time. Included in the business is a mysterious locked cabinet which becomes the focal point of the story.

What is wrong with the cabinet? Is it haunted? No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

I read this book back in 2017 and it was my third book by this author. After reading this book along two other ones that year I knew I was going to be grabbing whatever I could by this author in the future and I have quite a few of his works on my kindle that I have read. I think I am only lacking a handful of books that I have not read by him which I need to get to eventually but most of his work I have read.

This book was creepy and mysterious weaving an atmosphere of not knowing what to expect! I could hardly put the book down as I kept wanting to see what would happen next! Fast paced with twisted mystery kept me on the edge of my seat! Giving this one four "Chiller Thriller" stars!

Night Weaver by Brian G. Berry

πŸ•·️πŸ•·️πŸ•·️πŸ•·️

Four "Spider Invasion" Stars

Spider Action!

A small taste of what lies within:

A small town in Grant, Oregon is home to spiders that have infested themselves into an old house. The house is known as the "spider house" and it has been rumored that the spiders have done some things in the past so people tend to not have anything to do with the house.

But after a couple of kids go missing is when the town goes nutso and they wonder if maybe the kids disappeared into the spider house. Sheriff Kirby and his deputy will have to delve deep into the old house to find out exactly what is going on before anyone else goes missing!

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers so if you want to know more than you will need to read this book!

Thoughts:

Another great book by this author and though it had to do with creepy, crawly spiders this story went totally off the rails with some twisted spider action! The graphic descriptions of what the spiders were doing was just some icky stuff but definitely a fun read!

The spider action was fast paced and the story just kept clicking along which kept my insomnia fueled a few nights but it also kept me looking around at my arms as I felt that spiders might have been crawling on me. That is usually what happens when I read bug books - I keep thinking I am "feeling" something while I read.

This was a great book and as always looking forward to reading more of this author's books as I have read a few already and own a few more that I need to step into. 😊

Slayer (Darkblade #3) by Andy Peloquin

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Slash & Dash" Stars

Intense Action!

I am not going into a small taste as there is so much that happens within the story that most of it would be spoilers, so I am just going to give out thoughts.

Thoughts:

The third installment in the Darkblade series has quite of bit of action along with tons of deception and corruption that surrounds the Hunter as he tries to protect the young boy Halien. The author is able to weave the action where it becomes so intense that you feel like you are in the midst of what is happening to the Hunter.

The fight scenes are flawless and brings the action alive in your mind as you read about the Hunter as he takes on some "baddies" within this story. There wasn't much world building in this book as it was more of fighting scenes with the Hunter taking out the bad guys.

The story has opened up more of who the Hunter is and what lays in his past which is brought forth more in this book. The last half of the book my reading went into overdrive as more things were happening within the story and I kept wanting to see what was going to happen next!  Looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see where that leads the Hunter.
