Jason Crandall along with his son and daughter have settled down in the town of Shadow Springs as they all come to terms with the loss of Jason's wife. They move into an old mansion as Jason is a massage therapist and he wants to set up shop in the mansion. 

When Jason is introduced to Savannah Sturgess is when things start to slowly go awry as Savannah has a lot of the men in town chasing after her but when she ends up missing is when things take a bad turn and Jason finds himself in the middle of her disappearance! 

That is about all I can hand out with a small taste so if you want to know more then go read this book! 

Thoughts:

This book is what I would consider a supernatural suspense mystery that starts out a little slow which was due to background world building. As the story slowly moves along I found myself caught up in a supernatural mystery as the story has quite a bit of supernatural content as I moved through the story. 

Around the 40% mark the book picks up speed and I found myself staying up half the night one evening to the early morning hours as I became tangled up in the story and could not put the book down! 

The suspense of the story kept me guessing as once the character, Savannah Sturgess disappears the book goes into complete overdrive with many questions that need to be answered. All the questions are answered at the end of the book and I was floored to learn the answers! 

This book kept me guessing to the very end and I enjoyed this book so much. The author, Alistair Cross keeps the book flowing along with lots of surprises, twists and turns throughout the story. I have read books before by this author and have loved every one. Looking forward to reading whatever else he has coming down the pike!

Do You Really Know Your Coworkers?

A small taste of what lies within:

Dawn Schiff and Natalie Farrell work for a nutrition company called Vixed and they only co-exist alongside each other because they have to but when Dawn Schiff does not show up to work one morning it throws her office workers off kilter because Dawn is never late - she is always there at her desk. 

When Natalie becomes concerned she expresses that concern to her other coworkers and her boss but as time goes on something is off kilter about Dawn missing and then when a dead body turns up that throws the employees at Vixed into a tizzy and Natalie somehow becomes the focus of the police!

Thoughts:

This was my fourth book by author, Freida McFadden. I have read all her Housemaid book series and loved them. This book grabbed me right away as there was quite a bit of mystery and suspense at the get-go and the momentum of that suspense kept flowing throughout the rest of the book to the point where I could barely put it down!

There were a lots of twists and turns in this book but the last 40% of the book is when the book goes into overdrive and just kept me riveted to my cozy chair! Freida McFadden pulled the rug out from under me and gave me a jolt of surprise - that rarely happens but in this book there is a jolt! :) 

I have a few more books by this author on my kindle and will be reading them soon.  I have found a mystery/suspense/thriller author that I love and I am sticking with her!

What Would You Do With a Cursed Train Set?

A small taste of what lies within:

Annie Blunt along with her son, Charlie move out of the city to a small town in upstate New York as they are trying to start over after Annie lost her husband in a car accident. 

Annie and Charlie want to move on in a new life but when Charlie finds an old train set in the shed behind their house is when things go from serene and peaceful to a nightmare hell for both Annie and her son! 

That is about all I can hand out with a small taste, so if you want to know more then go read this book! 

Thoughts:

This was my first time reading this author and this horror story about a cursed train set piqued my interest. I love anything with creepy curses that are weaved into horror stories and this was a great story that just slowly built up with spooky terror the more I read the story. 

Having said that though I felt the story dragged a little bit along the way and also the author did some time jumps within the story as well which normally I am not crazy about time-jumping especially when the characters are completely different than what the story starts out with in the beginning. 

The time jumps are related to how many paths the cursed train set ended up being in children's hands during the course of its existence which was interesting but I felt that I wanted the story to return to the original characters that started out in the story and it seemed to take a long time to get there which drops this book down to 4 stars.  Other than that small quibble the rest of the book was mysteriously spooky and kept my attention span through some insomnia nights.

A small taste of what lies within:

Sheriff Zach Tully has left the big city of Los Angeles homicide unit and has arrived in the small town of Eternity hoping to help the town out with what they need but Tully soon learns that Eternity is not what he thought it would be with small town problems. 

Tully soon realizes that he is going to be just as busy in Eternity then he was in L.A. as there is some kind of serial killer on the loose and bodies are starting to pile up. The mayor along with some of the townspeople Tully feels is hiding something but he will do whatever he can to catch the killer and put everyone's fears to rest.....hopefully!

Thoughts:

This story slowly took off as I came to know Sheriff Tully - he is the small town sheriff that everyone might want in their town to help when help is needed.  

The story moves at a great pace and the deeper I became involved in the story the faster I was turning the pages of my kindle! There are quite a few characters in the story that makes up the town which I loved them all as they all have their own personality and I found myself wondering what was going to be happening next! There are some twists and turns throughout the story with tons of suspense, intrigue and mystery! 

The author, Tamara Thorne kept me wrapped in a web of mystery as I tried to figure out who the killer could be and to me I felt that nearly everyone was a suspect! Truly enjoyed this first book that kicks off the Old Wives' Tales series and looking forward to reading book two here soon!

A small taste of what lies within:

Millie is back in the third installment and this time she is married to Enzo and she has two children (Nico and Ada). Millie and her family move to Long Island as they buy a house so that they can get out of their apartment. The neighborhood seems nice and quiet but Millie soon learns that not everything in the neighborhood is up to par and her neighbors are anything but what they seem. Millie wonders if her and her family did the right thing by moving into a new house and she realizes that they might have made a bad mistake with moving there!

Thoughts:

This third installment was one crazy and twisted thriller ride that kept me reading at a fast pace!  The minute I started reading it I felt that I probably wouldn't be getting up from my cozy chair anytime soon and I was right as I was pulled immediately into the story.  

The author once again builds up the suspense of the story and by the time that I got past the 50% mark the story went into a tailspin of a twisted mess that kept me turning the pages of my kindle at breakneck speed! I literally read the last half of the book in about 3 hours as I could not put the book down! 

Another great book by this author and I am hoping that the author will continue with this series as it seems that each book gets better and better!

Action Mixed With Mystery!

A small taste of what lies within:

A man goes into a diner to get a meal but comes across a mysterious note stuck in the diner menu of someone needing help but what makes it more curious is that there is an address. What happens next is a twisted short romp that takes the man on a small quest of trying to be a good Samaritan! 

That is about all I can hand out with a small taste as this book is a short story under 25 pages! 

Thoughts:

First time reading this author and I have owned this book for a long while but wanted to read a short story so I jumped in with both feet! I really liked the story as it reminded me of the TV show The Twilight Zone as that is where this story seems to meander along as it has some twisted mayhem lying within these pages! 

I wish there had been more back story though of what takes place within this story which I cannot reveal as it would be a spoiler and I wish the story had been just a little bit longer but alas the story comes to a halt and it was over before I knew it! Still I thought it was a good short horror story and will be on the lookout for more books by this author which I will step into at some point.

Creepy Mystery!

A small taste of what lies within:

Caleb Lache has been going through depression after his girlfriend, Shannon was murdered and now he is starting to see things in the woods. He thinks he sees what could possibly be something that resembles bigfoot but not sure if his eyes are playing tricks on him or not however he knows that Shannon was found in the woods and whatever is out there could be responsible. In the meantime, Caleb is thrust into some life choices where he needs to become more responsible to the point of having to take care of a young boy that is handed into his care. 

Between the mystery of his murdered girlfriend, a supernatural creature that might or might not exist and the possibility of seeing the ghost of his dead girlfriend, Caleb is going to need to find the strength within himself to conquer all that is being handed to him on life's plate!

Is there something wandering in the woods? What really happened to his girlfriend, Shannon? Was she murdered by whatever is in the woods? Is Caleb seeing her ghost?

Thoughts:

This book jumps right into a spooky mystery and the creepy atmosphere starts to slowly unfold with the characters involved in the book. I love the shivers that were racing up and down my arms as the story started to take off into the unknown terror of the supernatural! 

The story slowly picks up speed and then goes into a fast pace of wondering mystery as the story becomes more involved with the spookiness surrounding the character, Caleb. As the mystery unfolded more into what happened to the character Shannon the book speeds off into overdrive as more things start happening! 

Another great book by this author and I own a few more of her books that I need to step into soon.

1950 - Vermont - Idlewild Hall

A boarding school that is possibly haunted and four roomies that become close friends (Cece, Sonia, Katie and Roberta) and what they each have to endure while living there along with the ghost of a girl named Mary Hand who wanders the boarding school halls.

2014 - Vermont - Idlewild Hall

Fiona Sheridan is a journalist but she has always wanted to know what happened to her sister, Deb that had died at Idlewild Hall. She decides to dig deep into the boarding school to find out what took place there and why it is considered to be haunted. Fiona feels that though justice was served as her sister's boyfriend was convicted of the crime something just seems off about the whole thing and she will do whatever it takes to dig deep into a long buried past to find out what really happened long ago!

Thoughts:

This was another great book by this author filled with intrigue, suspense, tension and a haunting. I felt that the story was a little slow at first with background world building but the book follows two timelines from 1950 to 2014 and your dropped into 1950 with the happenings of the four friends then dropped back into 2014 with the journalist character, Fiona as she tries to track down old leads from the 50's. 

The pace becomes faster the more I read of the book and there were some twists and turns along the way. There is one twist near the end of the book that I wasn't expecting and it shocked me out of my shoes! This is my fourth book by this author and looking forward to reading more of her work.

Twisted Mystery!

A small taste of what lies within:

Millie is back in this second installment as a housemaid except this time she has been hired to more or less be a cleaning lady - she does the laundry, cleans the house and even cooks for her new employers who are Douglas and Wendy Garrick.  The only odd thing about her job is that Douglas Garrick tells her to leave his wife, Wendy alone in the upstairs room as she is not feeling well and wants her privacy. Millie is not allowed to interact with her at all and if Millie needs anything she is to contact Douglas.

Things are not all what they seem and when things go into the weird zone then Millie becomes the focus when something happens with the Garricks and it will be all she can do to not only save her skin but to figure out what she needs to do to get out of the mess that has enfolded her into the twisted mystery of the Garricks lives!

Thoughts:

This story starts out a slow suspense build up as the author just draws you into the storyline gradually. The pace picks up though right after the 30% mark and as the mystery deepens of what is going on with Millie and her new employers it was all I could do of trying not to go to sleep as I wanted to keep reading the book! 

After the 40% mark the suspense is so thick that my insomnia went into full throttle as I could barely put the book down and wanted to almost read all night long! There were a few insomnia nights with this book as I just could not lay the book down!

The main character, Millie along with all the other characters in the book are just so believable that I can actually see the situation Millie finds herself in happening in real life. The author makes the characters so real and believable that you become attached to them along with the situations they find themselves in. I love the writing style of this author as she literally pulls the readers into her world and keeps them there for the duration of the book! There is a third book coming out in this series but it will be a long while before it gets here so in the meantime I am going to track down the other books that this author has written and see what else she has out there.

Addison Lockhart along with her boyfriend Luke tries to solve a haunting mystery of why Addison is having dreams of two young ghost girls. Addison thinks it might be somehow connected to her home that she inherited of Grayson Manor at first but then realizes that it is connected to another manor with the name of Rosecliff. 

Addison realizes that something is amiss when she delves into the mystery of why two sisters died at the manor of Rosecliff as a lot of the townspeople think it was just an accident but the more Addison investigates of what happened the more she seems to think that it was no accident and something else happened!

Thoughts:

I really like this series by the author, Cheryl Bradshaw and I have decided to continue on with the series as I read the first book about three years ago and I own all the books in the series. The stories are stand alone too - the only connection is some of the main characters. All the stories are different. 

I love all the characters in this series and the story moved quickly once it got going. It started out a little slow with a small buildup of background information of what was taking place in the story but once the mystery started to deepen then the pace picked up. Once I was past the 40% mark the story just took off and I felt myself caught up in a wind storm of pace as I was flipping through the pages faster as the mystery of the story intensified and I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next! Looking forward to continuing on with the series to see what mystery Addison finds herself in next!

The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James

Creepy Haunting! 

A taste of what lies within:

A ghost hunter, Alistair Gellis is in a pickle as his assistant Matthew Ryder is out of town and Alistair needs help on a ghost hunting adventure to the town of Waringstoke so he hires Sarah Piper from a temporary agency to help him. As luck would have it though Matthew Ryder does make an appearance at the last minute but it is decided that Sarah can just go along to be with them since Alistair is paying for her to be there. 

When they get to Waringstoke and meet with the client Mrs. Clare, she tells them that she needs her barn to be cleansed of a ghost but when they try to do just that the ghost does not want to leave the barn as something is keeping her there and Alistair, Matthew, and Sarah will have to find out why the ghost is hanging around and what happened for the ghost to be haunting the barn. The mystery deepens when they all find out there is a lot more going on then everyone originally thought as the ghost of Maddy Clare is on a revenge rampage and they will need to find out what secrets are lying in wait for them in the town of Waringstoke!

Thoughts:

Wow! I loved this story! The mystery of the haunting of Maddy Clare just slowly took shape the more I became involved in the story. The author slowly builds up the mystery and suspense of the story as she also unfolds of why there is a haunting. It takes awhile though for the haunting mystery to be solved but the atmospheric tones of the story just drew me right in to the book. 

I also loved all the characters - the main characters of Alistair, Matthew and Sarah just meshed together and I felt at times that the story was wrapped within the gothic genre. The setting of the story is not too long after the first World War and you can feel the times of that era as things happen within the book. 

Sometimes I felt that I was right there with the characters as things were happening and for an author to be able to pull you into their world where it feels like you are experiencing the feelings of the characters and the world they live in never ceases to amaze me. I tuned everything out while I was reading this story and was carted away to that time era. The haunting itself also slowly builds up to a crescendo and the last 40% of the book I just could not put the book down! I do have to say though there are a few steamy romance scenes dotted here and there within the story but other than that the story kept me held in suspense with lots of haunting mystery woven within.  Another great book by this author and looking forward to reading more of her work!

1982 - Town of Fell

Vivian Delaney takes a job at a run down motel in the town of Fell - she was supposed to be on her way to New York but did a stop over in the small town of Fell with her deciding to take a job at the motel running the night desk. Little does she know that things are not all what they seem at the motel and when one thing leads to another Vivian ends up going missing. 

2017 - Town of Fell

Thirty five years later, her niece Carly arrives in the town of Fell to see if she can track down what happened to her Aunt Vivian as no one in the family ever found out what happened so Carly decides to take it upon herself to hunt down information about her aunt. The past comes colliding with the future as Carly delves deep into the town - some people do not want to discuss the past of Fell and it will take a lot of determination of Carly to find out what exactly happened to her aunt!

Thoughts:

This was a great mystery/thriller along with a light touch of a haunting wrapped within the story. There are two timelines to keep track of as well - the book goes back and forth between the year 1982 and Vivian's story then jumps back to the present of 2017 with Carly's story.  Both timelines are intriguing. 

Usually I am not into back and forth timelines from past to future but this book was done well and the author made both timelines flow smoothly. The timeline for Vivian in 1982 will go a couple or so chapters so that the reader can grasp what is happening and then the timeline of 2017 for Carly is the same way which helps the flow of the story. 

There is quite a bit of mystery, suspense, tension, and spookiness wrapped within the story which kept me grounded into the book! I felt that the pace of the story moved quick within both timelines as I found both stories from Vivian and Carly's perspective to be mysterious and intriguing. Looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

Five "Twisted Psychological Terror" Stars

Suspenseful Twists & Turns!

A small taste of what lies within:

Millie is trying to get back on her feet after being in prison so she takes a job as a maid for a prestigious couple, Andrew and Nina Winchester along with their young daughter, Cecilia. 

Millie ends up being able to live in the house with the couple but things seem strange as the only room available is an attic room that has a door lock on the outside of the door but Millie is just happy to have a job and doesn't question anything. Millie soon learns though that things are not what they seem within the house and the Winchesters are not the perfect couple as the more Millie tries to do things in the house she seems to get blamed for stuff whether she is guilty or not and most of the accusations come from Nina! 

What is going on in the house? Why is Nina giving Millie a hard time? What is the secret about the attic room? No spoilers here so if you want to know more then go read this book!

Thoughts:

This book grabbed me right away as the author pulled me straight into the storyline. I sat down to read it thinking I would read just a couple or so chapters and the next I knew I had read a few chapters and became caught up in the story. 

The suspense just slowly builds up and I loved how the story just flowed along at a quick pace as I love the writing style of the author. Lots of intense moments in this book along with tons of twists and turns that kept my insomnia fueled to the point where I had a hard time putting this book down! One of the best psychological thrillers I have read in awhile!

Spooky & Freaky!

A small taste of what lies within:

Mallory Quinn has had a rough road which put her in rehab and now that she is out she wants a job to help her get back on her feet. She finds one as a baby sitter for a nice couple, Ted and Caroline Maxwell as they need someone to care for their son Teddy who is five years old. 

Mallory and Teddy hit it off and she settles in with baby sitting him. The Maxwell's want her on site so they let her live in the guest cottage so that she can be around whenever they need her.  Mallory loves having her own private space but she also loves spending time with Teddy. Teddy loves to draw and color pictures which is normal but as time moves along the picture drawing takes a turn toward the abnormal and Teddy starts drawing disturbing images which causes Mallory alarm. The more she tries to make sense of it and tries to voice her opinions and fears to the Maxwell's nothing seems to work!

What is Teddy drawing? Why do the parents not seem concerned? Why is Teddy drawing disturbing images?  No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This was my first time reading this author and I love a good mystery/supernatural story so I decided to check out this book to see what all the fuss was about. I have to admit though the story was one creepy and freaky ride into the unknown. 

I was captivated by the spooky supernatural vibes radiating throughout the story as I continued delving deeper into what was happening. I loved the characters - everyone seemed to mesh well together. I felt the character Mallory's frustration of trying to get the parents of Teddy to realize that something was wrong. 

There is lots of suspense buildup in the beginning of the story and the author included the picture drawing illustrations in the book so the readers could see what was transpiring. The pictures almost creeped me out more than the story! The pace moves along at a great flow throughout the story and not once did I get bored with what was unfolding in the storyline. Looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Samantha Reyes is on the high school newspaper team and she learns of deaths of high school girls that are found in unimaginable ways - parts of their bodies if not all parts are ash as if they were involved in a flammable fire. 

Samantha's first thought is spontaneous combustion and whether it exists or not but things become more spooky which leads her and some of her friends to wonder what else could be behind the deaths of the girls and they are going to find out what one way or another before anyone else dies!

Thoughts:

Normally I do not read a lot of the YA genre but the blurb of this story intrigued me and it sounded really spooky so I decided to jump in and read the book. 

I am so glad that I did as there was quite a bit of mystery of what was happening to the characters that were becoming fiery ash along with the young teenage characters trying to solve the mystery.  This was my first time reading this author and I realized after reading this book there is a sequel that I will need to read at some point.

Boo Spooks!

A taste of what lies within:

Kiera is back in this third installment with her trusty sidekicks, Mason and Zoe as all three of them are invited to the estate of Dane Crispin. They are wary of his invitation as they do not know what to expect from Crispin with him being an eccentric recluse but they soon learn that all he needs is help with spooks in his mansion which only Kiera can provide with hopefully some relief to get the ghosts to move on. 

Kiera is not only going to have a fight on her hands with Crispin's ghosts but she has learned more on "who" was hunting her in the beginning of this series and she is slowly remembering "bits and pieces" of her past. Spooks are wrapped up within her past and the men hunting her are tied in within some sort of conspiracy that Kiera along with Mason and Zoe will have to figure out what is going on before danger comes knocking on her door!

That is about all I can give on a taste as if you want to know more than you need to read this series! 

Thoughts:

I really like this series as I become so caught up in the ghostly capers that Kiera finds herself in that I have a hard time putting the book down. There are some chuckles with her friend, Zoe as the quips she comes off the wall with make me laugh. 

This series has kind of turned into more of a spooky mystery than spooky horror as the main character, Kiera is really trying to solve paranormal ghosts that are stuck in between worlds. 

As always, author, Darcy Coates is able to bring the atmosphere of the hauntings/ghosts more into focus within this story and keeps the mystery of Kiera's past wrapped tight but the author builds up the suspense of the bad men that are still after Kiera. After I hit the 55% mark the story moved faster and I totally went into insomnia fuel once I hit the 68% mark as I could not put the book down with reading the last of the book during the night! Coates kept the story moving lightning quick and I felt there was no way I would be able to sleep till I finished the book! Looking forward to reading the rest of the series when it becomes available.

Four "Train Terror" Stars

Suspenseful & Mysterious!

A small taste of what lies within:

Elspeth McGillcuddy is riding on a train and is admiring the view out her window when another train passes she sees a man choking a woman then sees the woman fall, but by the time she gets up to take a closer look the other train is already gone. 

She begins to wonder if what she saw was "real" but when she tries to find out details about the other train and comes up with no body Elspeth decides to discuss it with her friend Miss Marple and let her investigate the crime as with there being no body how can anyone say that there was a crime. 

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers so if you want to know more than you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This was my first time reading author, Agatha Christie! Yes - I know it is shameful really to never have read her books with her being the Queen of Mystery, but I figure better late than never and so here I am reading my first book by her. 

I really enjoyed this story and even though I read the book out of sequence I realized that it doesn't matter as the books are all stand alone. I thought the pacing of the book was fast and once the character, Miss Marple becomes involved the story picks up speed as the mystery deepens within the story and I was rattling my brain trying to figure out who the mystery killer was along with who was the mystery victim! 

The suspense of the story kept me on the edge of my seat and I would find myself reading chunks of the story with hours going by as the mystery surrounded me. I am so thankful that I finally decided to jump into a book by Agatha Christie. It was my first but it won't be my last!

Four "Mystery & Magic" Stars

Magical Mayhem!

A taste of what lies within:

Skye wants to be on her own without her parents, so she throws caution to the wind by buying a house in the heart of Salem as she feels that she is drawn to this house for some reason. The house has sat abandoned for a long time and no one in Salem seems to want to live there, but when the townspeople find out that Skye is moving in, tongues start wagging and the news spreads like wildfire. 

Detective Jerome Phips is especially curious as to why this stranger would want to buy "that house" as he has personal reasons for not wanting anyone to move into the house as his mother disappeared from there when he was a boy. 

When Skye starts checking out the inside of the house, she ends up releasing a latch in the library which opens up a secret wall panel and a skeleton falls out. After she calls the police and Detective Phips shows up on her doorstep things become complicated as Skye realizes that she was meant to buy this house as it is in her blood to be connected to a house that once belonged to witches. 

Detective Phips is not only trying to solve the disappearance of his mother he is also trying to solve murders around his town, but when he clashes with Skye on how she is connected to the house is when things become awry as they both decide that things surrounding the history of the house might somehow be related to the murders. 

Thoughts:

When I picked up this book to read I didn't realize that I would be so drawn to the story as this is a new author to me and the pace of the book just flows along. The author just drew me right into the story of Skye and how she is connected to this house in Salem. The mystery of the house, the city, and the characters just kept me entranced into the book. 

I could tell that the author did extensive research of the witches from that era as it shows with all the extensive detail of those historical times. I was also impressed at how the story just played itself out and how the author weaved the characters around to fit the storyline. More things happen within the storyline as characters are revealed that want to do harm to Skye and Jerome along with rituals being performed and there is a historical knife that is imbued with powers, but to see how everything comes together you will just have to read the book.
