The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Four "Freaky Folklore" Skulls!

Twisted Terror!

A small taste of what lies within:

Melissa (a/k/a Mouse) along with her dog, Bongo go out to the backwoods of North Carolina as her grandmother passed away leaving a house that needs to be cleaned out, but with a warning from her dad that the house could be bad as her grandmother was a hoarder of all things. Mouse just decides to "step into it" and do what needs to be done to help out her dad no matter what.

Not too long after "tackling the dirty job of cleaning the house" Mouse takes a hike out into the woods with her dog, Bongo and stumbles across an area with some freaky stones. From that point on in the story, things go totally weird and spooky things start happening around her grandmother's house.

Mouse eventually meets her neighbors (Foxy, Tomas and Skip) which tell her crazy stories about "things out in the woods" and when Mouse discovers an old journal from her step-grandfather, Cotgrave and his ramblings of what he thinks is out in the woods, the creepiness hits the fan!

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers so if you want to know more about this book, then go read it!

Thoughts:

This was a great tension twisted (definitely a great title for this book "twisted") edge of the seat - no holds barred creeped out crazy horror thriller! Wow! First time reading this author and this book just took me into an insomnia fueled freaky dreams a couple or so nights as it dug deep into my psyche!

The story is told from the pov of Mouse throughout the whole book and what she goes through with finding the "things" out in the woods. I really liked all the characters and loved the dog, Bongo.

The book had some creepy moments kind of in the beginning of the story but it was spotty here and there throughout until I hit the 50% mark then it totally went "bonkers" and I had a hard time putting it down! Total overdrive scary stuff right after the halfway mark and totally kept me wanting to read the story without taking a break! I have been wanting to read this book for awhile so I am happy that I finally dived into it as it was one creepy ride into the unknown backwoods filled with spooky things!

However, having said all that this book went totally into the twilight zone strange after the 70% mark as I wasn't expecting the story to go the way it did which drops this book down a star. The story does a complete 360 degrees from spooked scared out of my pants to hyperventilating let me out of this book zone!

I know one thing for sure and that is if I find any weird stones in my backyard I am leaving the damn things alone! Not adventuring into the wild woods to locate any sources of where they came from as that is what happens in this story. Like the old saying "ignorance is bliss" would have worked well in this story! πŸ˜…

All in all though the book has plenty of spook moments and the characters dialogue kept me giggling as I would find myself laughing while reading the book as the character quips were priceless.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

 πŸŒŸπŸŒŸπŸŒŸπŸŒŸπŸŒŸ

Five "Awesome Adventure" Stars

Spellbound Quest!

Thoughts:

Everyone that reads fantasy stories knows the details of this book no doubt so I am not doing a backstory on it but will give my thoughts on it instead.

I have seen all the movies and have watched them over and over again but I have never stepped into the book till now. I thought that the book had way more detailed storyline than I saw in the movie so that made the book more enjoyable.

The quest of Bilbo Baggins and what he learns on his journey with the dwarves made him grow up quickly with seeing things outside of the Shire. A quest for adventure is definitely filled with tons of things happening to Bilbo whether it was good and bad, but I felt that the book really holds more emotion within than what was portrayed on the big screen.

I am happy that I finally stepped out onto the road for my own adventure with this story as I was quite pleased with the book and will reread it in the future. Another awesome book by Tolkien added to my favorites shelf.

Hobbomock by Ryan C. Thomas

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Wicked Evil Witch" Stars

Blood and Gore Action!

A small taste of what lies within:

Four teenager friends (Josh, Hunter, Gemma and Kailyn) want to spend some time together out at a cabin that Josh's dad owns. The cabin is so far out in the woods that cell phone reception is spotty, but the teens don't care as the guys are wanting to play a card game and the girls are wanting to study star gazing. What they don't realize is that some other teens show up crashing the solitude thinking there is a big party going on out at the cabin.

All of the teens are in for a evil surprise though as a witch is roaming the woods and she is out to cause harm to anyone that steps onto the land. When the teens realize that she is on the hunt for them it becomes a need for survival for all of them to stand against her!

That is about all I can give on a small taste and if you want to know more then you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This was my second book by this author and I have been wanting to read it for awhile. There is lots of blood and gore action throughout most of the book and it is all described in graphic details.

The pace of the book is fast as I could hardly put it down! Not too long after the teens get to the cabin the mayhem begins with the witch and most of the book is the teens just trying to survive.

I really enjoyed this story as the witch character is about the evilest witch I have ever read and the things she is capable of doing to the teens kept me on the edge of my seat along with staying up late reading it.

However, there are trigger warnings in this book too for animal lovers. So however you would want to handle reading about pets being harmed you might want to skip over that part. I could not read those parts myself.

The only other complaint I would have is that the story dragged on too long as 80% of the book is about the witch attacking the teens and the teens trying to figure out how to kill her. Though the book does fall under the 200 page mark I still thought that it could have been made shorter with all what was transpiring within the story. It just seemed to meander way too long with the things that were happening with the characters.

All in all though the book was great and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. I have a few more on my kindle by him to dive into at some point. This is a great book to read around this time of year and a great book to read for Halloween.

Clown In A Cornfield by Adam Cesare

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Crazy Creepy Clown" Stars

Screaming Tension!

A small taste of what lies within:

Kettle Springs is a quite small town where everyone knows everyone, so when Doctor Maybrook and his daughter, Quinn move there it seems just to be the place for them to start over. Quinn seems drawn to some of the teenagers that like to cause trouble but it is more mischievous trouble than anything and when she ends up getting tossed out of class along with the new friends is when things go awry.

The town's mascot is Frendo the clown but when something dresses up like the clown and starts stalking the students at a party out in the cornfield is when things go south quickly. It turns into a survival of the fittest as the party goers have to endure Frendo!

That is about all I can give on a small taste as if you want to know more than you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

It has been a long time since I read a book by this author and this was a fun gory ride into the cornfield! The very beginning of the book is a little slow as Quinn and her father get settled into the town, but as soon the party gets started then the book picks up speed quickly. It goes from zero to sixty in seconds and I was having to buckle up for the ride of my life!

Lots of violent mayhem and pools of blood splash across the pages of this book as the pace of the book goes into overdrive. The tide turns quick in this book as the story goes from calm to a twisted mess of carnage right after the 30% mark and then stays at a high level of intensity throughout the remainder of the story not once letting up or slowing down! Another book to add to my favorites shelf and it is a perfect read for the Halloween season!

Scarecrows by Michael Bray

🌟🌟🌟

Three "Scarecrow Spooky" Stars

Spooky Strawmen!

A small taste of what lies within:

When three friends (Dwayne, Randy, and Kenny) trespass on an old man's property (Jorell Samsonite) they get more than they bargained for when they start exploring the property as Jorell has scarecrows guarding his house and land. The friends find out real quick that the scarecrows are not ordinary and once they are on the property the friends might be stuck there with no escape!

That is about all I can give with a small taste without giving away spoilers, so if want to know more about the story then you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

The story starts out creepy especially when the friends arrive on the property then things kind of escalate with some spooky happenings surrounding the scarecrows. This story is a short novella with about 44 pages so it was kind of quick read.

The pace of the book picks up through the last half of the book but I wasn't happy with the ending of the story which that is why this book is getting three stars and not four. I was planning on giving it four stars but then when the ending hit me it left me wondering what happened.

I know sometimes things are not wrapped up with a bow in horror books but I was thinking there would be more to the story and it just totally ends with a crashing boom leaving me with a "what was that ending about" look. Trust me - you would not want to see my face when I finished the book. Most of the time this author writes some cool books as I have read a few by Bray but this one isn't up there with those other cool books he has out there.

4:50 From Paddington (Miss Marple #8) by Agatha Christie

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Train Terror" Stars

Suspenseful & Mysterious!

A small taste of what lies within:

Elspeth McGillcuddy is riding on a train and is admiring the view out her window when another train passes she sees a man choking a woman then sees the woman fall, but by the time she gets up to take a closer look the other train is already gone.

She begins to wonder if what she saw was "real" but when she tries to find out details about the other train and comes up with no body Elspeth decides to discuss it with her friend Miss Marple and let her investigate the crime as with there being no body how can anyone say that there was a crime.

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers so if you want to know more than you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This was my first time reading author, Agatha Christie! Yes - I know it is shameful really to never have read her books with her being the Queen of Mystery, but I figure better late than never and so here I am reading my first book by her.

I really enjoyed this story and even though I read the book out of sequence I realized that it doesn't matter as the books are all stand alone. I thought the pacing of the book was fast and once the character, Miss Marple becomes involved the story picks up speed as the mystery deepens within the story and I was rattling my brain trying to figure out who the mystery killer was along with who was the mystery victim!

The suspense of the story kept me on the edge of my seat and I would find myself reading chunks of the story with hours going by as the mystery surrounded me. I am so thankful that I finally decided to jump into a book by Agatha Christie. It was my first but it won't be my last!

The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Sword & Shields" Stars

Action Packed Fantasy!

Thoughts:

I am not doing a background taste of the storyline as there is just too much that goes on within the story that it is best to just give out thoughts of the book.

The story follows three characters: Elvar (a daughter of a Jarl), Varg (a thrall/slave), and Orka (a huntress). All three of these characters have their own paths they take within the story and you follow them closely of things that happen in their lives but as time goes on their paths will cross which happens with two of the characters and eventually I feel will happen to all three down the road into the other books as this series continues to expand.

As I was reading about each character I became attached to each one and what each one has to do in order to survive in the world of Vigrio along with the friends they meet on their life paths.

There is also tons of battle/blood action within this book as well as there is continued upheaval in the world as there is always something happening with one of the characters.

The author, John Gwynne has become one of my favorite all time fantasy authors and I am putting this author in the league of Tolkien as the writing style of Gwynne just visually captures everything I want to see in a high fantasy story.

The emotions of the story run rampant in this book and I was hooked from the first chapter as the author just drops you right into the storyline as there really is no world building with this book. Something happens right away in the book and I was taken so far away into this fantasy world that everything else around me disappeared!

Besides the characters there are also creatures that roam the land and will interact with all three characters keeping this story on a fast and fascinating pace! There is never a dull moment in this book!

If I could give this book 50 stars I would as that is how much I loved this book and I have the next book, Hunger of the Gods as well which I will be looking forward to reading soon.

Once More With Feeling by David Brian

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Four "Twisted Thriller" Stars

Crime/Mystery Thriller Grabber!

A taste of what lies within without giving away spoilers:

Simon and Kate Collier are wanting to have a night out on the town so they have the next door neighbor come over to keep an eye on their three children, but things go totally awry when they come home and their children are being held hostage by a cult family called the Sons and Daughters of Light who are lead by a crazy fanatical leader named King Mod.

Simon and Kate will do whatever it takes to release their children from the hands of King Mod but what Simon doesn't know is that his wife Kate has been holding back secrets from him and she knows more about the cult than she is letting on as at one time Kate was a part of the cult family and King Mod is finally exacting his revenge on her escaping the family!

Thoughts:

This is a great book and slightly different than what this author normally writes as he branched away from the horror genre and has crossed over into the crime thriller genre.

The story reminded me a lot of the Manson family even though this story is totally fiction - the craziness of King Mod to me was like the craziness of Charles Manson and the cult family calls themselves "The Family" just like the Manson cult did as well.

There was a lot of fast pacing with some twists and turns - suspense and mystery wrapped up within some graphic crime scenes where some of that horror seeps in from what the author is known for within his other books. Another great book by this author and a book I won't soon forget.

Horror Movies - Halloween October Fest - Week of the 8th - 14th

My second week of horror movies are a little bit of a mix with movies I own and movies that I have not seen. So old and new to me are mixed in with this batch.

October 8th

Spirit (2001) - watched on Freevee

My rating: πŸ’€

Plot/synopsis:

When Kelly and her father move to New Orleans after the death of her mother, strange things start happening in their new home. Kelly is convinced that the house is haunted by a ghost who needs her help. Her father does not believe her, so she enlists her friend Cole to help discover the truth.

Thoughts:

I didn't realize that Greg Evigan played in a ghost movie but as much as I use to like him back in the day - this movie wasn't memorable for him as I didn't even know that it existed. This movie was just.....odd and I didn't feel any spookiness with it at all. If anything it put me to sleep. You can turn off all the lights in your house with this one as there is nothing scary here!

October 9th

What Lies Beneath (2000) - own this one

My rating:πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/synopsis:

The wife of a university research scientist believes that her lakeside Vermont home is haunted by a ghost - or that she is losing her mind.

Thoughts:

This is one creepy movie and I don't care how many times I watch it - I still jump at the spooky stuff that happens in this movie. This is one movie that I make sure to watch right around Halloween as the creepy atmosphere is perfect for this time of season.

October 10th

Hell Trip (2018)  - watched on Freevee

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

A group of young US tourists' vacation in Africa turns into the ultimate nightmare when they arrive at an abandoned lodge isolated in a remote African rural area that holds an ominous and deadly secret.

Thoughts:

This movie was a typical slasher movie giving it two stars for effort. The slasher was kind of a surprise but once everything started playing out I just felt that it didn't have enough blood for me otherwise I would have given it three stars. :)

October 11th

Joyride 2 (2008) - own this one

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

After their car breaks down in the desert, four friends try to find their way back to civilization while trying to escape Rusty Nail's bloody wrath.

Thoughts:

This second movie in this franchise is really good and I feel that there is quite a bit of tension with nail biting moments. This movie is almost as good as the first movie. Rusty Nail is just as bad a villain as he was in the first movie.

October 12th

House on Haunted Hill (1959) - watched on Freevee

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

A millionaire offers $10,000 to five people who agree to be locked in a large, spooky, rented house overnight with him and his wife.

Thoughts:

The older movies usually hold up as well as the newer movies now days. I love Vincent Price in this movie and though there are some cheesy moments I still felt the spookiness of the ghosts that appear in this one.

October 13th

Christine (1983) - own this one  (Stephen King movie adaption)

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

A teenage boy (Arnie) buys a car with an evil mind of its own and the boy's nature starts to change to reflect it.

Thoughts:

I read the book within the last three or four years and there are slight differences between the book and the movie, but I love this movie which shows how evil a car can be and that anyone can become a victim with this car! I find myself rooting for the car in this thriller as revenge is sweet as the victims deserved what they got for treating Arnie bad. The only ones that didn't deserve to be treated bad was Arnie's best friend, Dennis and Arnie's girlfriend, Leigh.

October 14th

House of Wax (2005)

My rating:  πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis

A group of teens are unwittingly stranded near a strange wax museum and soon must fight to survive and keep from becoming the next exhibit.

Thoughts:

I love this movie too and I make sure to watch it every year around Halloween. The creepiness of the wax museum and the baddies in this one are enough to give you nightmares. I love all the characters in this one.....well except for maybe Paris Hilton - lol - but all in all the jump scares are timed perfect and this is definitely a nail biter right up to the end of the movie.

That is my wrap up this week for horror movies so will see you all next week for more "spooky boo" fun!

Horror Movies - Halloween October Fest - October 1st - 7th, 2022

I am back this year with doing the horror movies for Halloween October Fest that I will be watching and adding in thoughts with my ratings. I have already started watching horror movies and will be adding them in here for my first week of October. It might not be every night either but I will add them in as I go and will put in what network I watched them on.

October 1st:

Witchboard (1986) - Freevee (through Prime)

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

The plot revolves around a guy named Brandon (Stephen Nichols) that throws a party where his ex-girlfriend, Linda (Tawny Kitaen) shows up with her new boyfriend. Brandon coaxes his ex into playing with the Ouija board with him to contact a spirit named David who had already been in contact with Brandon. Then Linda really loved playing with the Ouija board so she takes the board with her so she can keep using it, but the spirit starts possessing her a little bit at a time to the point where she will become fully possessed and she is almost unrecognizable as the shy person she use to be.

Thoughts:

I have never seen this movie before and really didn't know any of the actors that played the parts in the movie. The movie just wasn't really scary to me as normally a movie with a Ouija board involved is always super spooky but this movie just kind of flopped in that department. I wouldn't even really consider this movie a B movie either - kind of falls between a C and D. I know one thing I was not on the edge of my seat with this movie - if anything I was struggling to stay awake.

October 2nd:

Alone in the Dark (2005) - Freevee (through Prime)

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

Edward (Christian Slater) is a paranormal investigator and a former agent from Bureau 713 who has in his possession an artifact from a Native American tribe that he is trying to take to a museum where a woman named Aline (Tara Reid) that is the curator there can help him with the artifact. But while he is trying to get there he is attacked by a super human villain that not even bullets can kill who is trying to intercept the artifact. When Edward finally gets there to the museum, Aline also has an artifact from the same tribe and when they both are examining the pieces a supernatural creature attacks the museum.

Thoughts:

When I first started watching this movie I had remembered that I had seen this movie a long time ago and I remember that it was really good with lots of action and creature feature action as well. It was different at that time to watch Christian Slater play in a horror movie as I have always seen him in other movies. This time around watching it was just as much fun as the first time I had seen it and the action keeps up with through most of the movie. Lots of cool special effects too.

October 3rd:

Queen of Spades (2021) - Prime

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

An entity known as the Queen of Spades will appear if an ancient ritual is performed by drawing a door and a staircase on a mirror. Four teenagers try it out just for the heck of it thinking that nothing will happen but when they start seeing the Queen of Spades in the mirror is when things go sour real fast.

Thoughts:

I did not know any of the actors/actresses that portrayed the characters in this movie and I have never heard of this movie before either, but it wasn't a bad movie - it just reminded me of the movies Bloody Mary quite a bit. An entity appears in a mirror then goes after all those involved with killing them in horrific ways. It was creepy but I was not overly spooked out.

October 4th:

Burnt Offerings (1976) - Paramount

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

Ben Rolfe along with his wife Marion and son, Davey rent a summer house which is really a mansion for $900 for the whole summer from a sister and brother, but there is one catch - they must stay the entire summer and they must care for their mother who is in an upstairs room.  They take it and never realize that they could be trapped at the home especially when the sister and brother disappear off the premises leaving the Rolfe's to fend for themselves.

Thoughts:

I read the book about four years ago and the movie follows the book closely. I had never seen the movie till now and I am glad that I finally was able to watch it. I found the movie to be more mysterious than anything. It wasn't overly scary and the pace of the movie with some different things happening kept me intrigued enough to see what would happen next.

October 5th:

Jeepers Creepers (2001) - own this one

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/synopsis:

A sister (Trish) and brother (Darry) are traveling home together but they end up being almost overrun by some crazy psycho driving a truck that nearly runs them off the road. As they pass an old church they see that same truck parked next to the old church and they see the man dumping what looks like bodies down a chute. When the man sees them going by slowly he jumps in his truck and chases them running them off the road.  They get too curious about what they had witnessed so they go back to the old church to investigate.....big mistake as now they have a bullseye on their back from the psycho!

Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite movies and I make sure to watch it every Halloween! When I first watched it years ago, I remember the trepidation of the slow buildup of fear as they both checked out the old church and I kept thinking the psycho guy was going to show up, but this movie has tons of tension and suspense with everything that happens with the psycho. The movie really goes from bad to worse in creeping horror as I still get breath hitches at certain parts of the movie!

October 6th:

Incident in a Ghostland (2018) - Netflix

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/synopsis:

A mother (Pauline) and her two daughters (Beth and Vera) move into a house they inherited from their aunt, but as soon as they move in they are attacked by two intruders and the mother fights to save her daughters. Years later Beth is married and has a son plus she is an author - she gets a cryptic message that she needs to come home as Vera is not well so she leaves her husband and son to go back home. But things are not what they seem and if anything - is all of it real or imagined?

Thoughts:

This movie was a fast paced train wreck right from the beginning! It was crazy weird with the intruders and then most of the movie I was wondering if Beth had really been married and had a son because things go really awry near the last half of the movie making you wonder if any of what Beth and Vera are enduring is still part of the past or part of the present. But thankfully the movie ended good but I was a nervous wreck for most of the movie. lol  But it was a scary physiological thriller and I am glad that I finally watched it as I had been seeing it advertised on social media.

October 7th:

Joyride (2001) - own this one

My rating: πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Plot/Synopsis:

A brother (Lewis) is on his way to pick up his friend (Venna) in Colorado when he learns that his brother, (Fuller) is in jail and has made bail so he needs a ride home.  Lewis swings by to pick up Fuller which ends up being a big mistake as Fuller ends up putting a cb radio in Lewis' car which leads them on a path to hell with a crazed truck driver!

Thoughts:

This is another favorite movie as this is one crazy ride into terror when the truck driver goes nutso with the brothers plus it gets really crazy when Venna is involved and things go from bad to really bad for the brothers.  I can literally munch my way through a whole bag of chips with this movie!

So that is my wrap up this week with horror movies! Really enjoyed stepping into new stuff and also revisiting favorites as well.

Seven Cleopatra Hill by Justin Holley

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Five "Haunted Hotel" Stars

Supernatural Spooks!

A small taste of what lies within:

James Landis and his wife, Victoria are eager to spend a weekend in the Jerome Grand Hotel in Jerome, Arizona which is considered to be haunted. As they settle into the hotel they realize that they might be stuck there for awhile as a blizzard has rolled in but what they do not realize is being trapped is the least of their worries as what roams the hotel is far worse than any blizzard and they will have to fight to survive if they want to make it out of the hotel alive!

That is about all I can give on a small taste without giving away spoilers, so if you want to know more about this story then you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This is my first time reading this author and I was hooked from the very beginning of this book as it just grabbed me right away as I could barely put the book down! There are more than just the two main characters that I mentioned above as there are quite a few characters that I loved as well. There are two kids, Miles and Janey who are also the main focal characters of this story that are adorable but at the same time grown up way beyond their years along with some other characters that I loved as well.

The haunting was really spooky and the more I became invested in the story the more I wanted to stay camped out in the hotel with the characters. The pace is fast once more things start happening in the story and after the half way mark the book goes into full blown haunting horror along with a creature feature as well. This story is wrapped with everything creepy and chilling! Looking forward to reading more by this author as he has a few other books out as well to step into.

Werewolf on the Western Front by Shane Carrow

Four "Fur and Fangs" Stars

Jaw Snapping Terror!

A small taste of what lies within:

In the middle of World War I, Lucas Avery and Sam Carter are called upon to pursue something of a supernatural evil that has appeared to be stalking and killing soldiers. No one really knows what kind of creature is laying waste to the soldiers until Avery and Carter appear on the scene, but once they learn what is really happening they will have to go deep into themselves and use their skills with knowledge from their previous adventure to track down this supernatural creature!

Thoughts:

This story had a small slow buildup as it took me some time to get into the setting of the story, but once the characters, Lucas Avery and Sam Carter appeared on the scene the story just took off and I was on a fast crash course of horror!

I love the characters of Avery and Carter as they seem to dive in with both feet to their situation and I am hoping that the author continues with these characters in future books.

Lots of fur action in this book and looking forward to reading more by this author!
